I have been looking for a laboratory crusher for years. Been threatening to make a tiny jaw crusher at some point. What is the size rock you want to crush?

years ago I saw an add in Lapidary Journal for a 2"x3" jaw crusher for $300 or $400. I bought it and the first time I used it I put in a Brazilian Agate nodule about 2"-2.5" and broke the housing on the bearings. I had crushed some smaller stuff down but that one piece broke the bearings. I called them back and they replaced the bearings and said that never happened before. The second time I used it after replacing the bearings I broke it again. I took it lock stock and barrel and threw it away. I purchased a Bico 5"x7" crusher for $8k. This is a true bench scale jaw crusher. BTW I was the first in my neighborhood to have their own crusher. The first crusher proved to me I needed a better crusher and it has been worth it to have a good one.
I am not a welder but if you make one, design it so the jaws can be replaced. they ware and I have had one that cracked in two it was about 3/4" thick. It appeared to be due to a defect in the plate steel but I had it several years so just ordered a new plate. I really like my crusher.

So 1 inch stone is what you are crushing? What is final product size. There is a small hand crusher called the crazy crusher, looks pretty cheap. www.crazycrusher.com/

So how much rock do you have to crush? Have you checked St John's Rock Shop not too far from you. they use to have a crusher. Can you get them to crack it for you for so much a pound? I crack rock for people here occasionally. I also have a lot of crappie chert in my yard and have been known to make my own road gravel as well. BTW a jaw crusher crackes black walnuts really well but Hickory nuts just slide up and down in the jaws. Always trying th think outside the box.

What’s wrong with a hammer and a gunnysack? Hard to find gunnysacks these days. I got a few and I watch them very closely!

What’s wrong with a hammer and a gunnysack? There were several year where I had to hand crack over a ton of material each year and it takes a lot of time. I can crack 100 pounds in 10 min with a crusher

Nah, that's too easy. I crush rocks for furniture inlay, aboriginal paint pigment, and whatever.

Wish I could, but don't have that kind of equipment.

phil I am a little further away that 6 hrs. If you don't have much rock it might be worth it to send it. Though postage would cost more than crushing the rock. What size do you need. As you know a crusher makes a variety of sizes. My max jaw opening is about 1.5 inches my min is about 1/2" opening in the jaw. Anything that cracks flat can get through the jaw say 1"x4"x6" could go through the jaw. you either hit it with a hammer or recrack with all the too large pieces. I am guessing there is about 15% waste depending on how small you crush rock. The smaller the more fines. Though in the days before I got this there was a guy in Birmingham AL that had a hammermill. The waste (- 1/4") from that was 30% but he was real cheap at $0.10/lb and I did the work myself.

Cant get much cheaper than this Yeah, but crushing 80 pounds a couple times a year all the way down to 3/32 and powder would kill me using that thing.
