Yay! Good deal, jamesp! I knew you would figure it out a some point. Now, did you just do a few pieces of that red glass (ladies of the night tokens, lol), or is there more to come? I wish I had just a fraction of the time you have to devote yourself to all this, lol. On the desert trip we just got back from, I picked up a "half" of a glass phone insulator. It is a clear-ish glass, lightly colored blue/green. Have some pics to take today. Well, logic is coming out of this: A powerful vibe to bulldoze a thick sticky slurry full of soft material to be abraded. High rubbing forces with zero bumping and banging. Makes perfect sense. I do have spare time. I have always told you that. I do have some broken insulators in the rotary. Greenish blue Hemingways. I need to borrow a BB gun to make glass cones, ever seen them ? Shoot a glass TV or thick plate glass and it spits out cones from the other side. Lets get those trip photos posted. Show them rocks.

Old glass, at least stuff from the long-gone plants in my area, turns blue/green (and sometimes light blue/pink) from exposure to radiation from the sun. Glass made from N Florida silicates often turns purple. All that may have to do with the metals in the sand at manufacture Bill.

Yep. But even the local sand made glass that turned different colors after sun irradiation.

The longer you leave them out the more purple they will become.

Alright, alright, already, keep your shorts on, lol. Just took some more photos, working on it. (The anticipation builds......)

While on the subject of glass...
Here's some pics of a few select pieces picked up while prospecting in the desert last month.
This just an ice-clear shard from the bottom edge of a larger bottle.
A few more clear ones, and just a few pieces of the purple-ish glass. I have a bag of these, in varying shades of purple. A lot of them are smallish pieces.
I liked a lot of them that had patterns. Will have to be careful tumbling them, so they don't come out like overdone snakeskin agate. A fine line between not enough, and enough.
A thicker blue glass bottle fragment. Milk of Magnesia?
This is the insulator I spoke of. Since you rushed me, jamesp , I didn't even take the time to knock the dirt off.
It has one crack, and a few bubbles in it.
Let me get to that trip report now.

More than a few bottle collectors have been ripped off buying old Coke bottles that were intentionally irradiated and advertised as "rare special color".
I have a locally made bottle that probably received this treatment by someone who didn't know what they were doing. It looks almost black rather the intended cobalt blue.

No doubt there is manganese in the glass, noted metal in the area. Friend of a friend found 100's of these in a dump. He painted the letters. Not supposed to in collecting world.

Wonder if they are taken out of the sun for a while they go back to normal?

Looks like you found a bit of every color rockpickerforever. The old rail road track routes have old glass out your way. Will you throw a few in the tumbler ?

Bought this on Ebay. Don't know what it all means: Selling a D.A.S. HARVEST MOON Case of Mixed Glass Cullet Pieces. 15 different sections with unique pieces ranging from rounds, medallions, double ingots, shards and more. There is aventurine, lutz, oxblood, and dichroic glass throughout the set. All were naturally formed out of the furnace and collected after the run. Very unique gift that would be great for the marble collector who has everything! Will ship quickly and securely. Thanks for looking and best of luck!. Pulled one out of vibe early. About 3/4 inch This one had a melt polish. But as meat was removed from it in the tumbler micro bubbles were exposed. The white glass had less bubbles.

Do they change back to clear ? Yes, I'm assuming they do as I got most of them clear and then when I put in widows they turned purple. If you broke them up, tumbled them would they still change if in sun?

If you broke them up, tumbled them would they still change if in sun? I think manganese glass can be cast purple. But can change in sun exposure to purple too. Certain it would continue changing whether it is whole or broken into pieces tumbled. I never knew how long it takes for sun light to change glass color. figured it was over many years. How long had you owned those that turned purple ?

It depends on the amount of mananese in them and how much uv light they are exposed to. I was reading more about them tonight. Didn't know there are some that change grey, straw and even amber.

Surprised. That fast, never would have imagined. Always thought of glass to be stable in color and only changing color after years of baking in the sun.

It's really kind of cool watching them turn. If it's not raining I'm going riding in the morning, if it is then I'll head to storage and see what I can find in there for you to smash up.

My Mom started collecting marbles about two years ago (my DH husband always jokes it because she lost hers). I've done some research and bought her a few nice old collectors marbles since. These cullets are from handmade marbles. There is a town in east Germany, Lauscha, that used to make marbles from 1850s to early 1900s. All the seconds, cane ends and cullets were burried. People go there to dig up the cullets now. I always thought that would be a cool place to go dig.

fantastic5I need to talk to you. I just did what you did. I placed a bid on an auction site for a play vehicle sight unseen. I have a Toyota Tundra 4WD 2000 w/350,000 miles. I placed a bid on the same machine except an SUV (Sequoia) body. 2007 w/144,000 miles + 4WD. I know the vehicle well mechanically. same engine/drivetrain as the super reliable Tundra truck etc. Vehicle appraised at $8000 less what looks to be minor front end damage like a bashed big front bumper that I was going to replace with a steel red neck bumper. Vehicle in Charlotte and drive able. I want to trick out a Sequoia into off road camper/go anywhere monster. Got 22 hours left on bid. Had to put $400 deposit down. What do you think ? This is similar what I want to make out of it:
