Well I know you've got the majority all watching to see what you come up with
Visited Decatur Glass Blowing today. They let me take a chair and watch. was blown away at that craft. Talked to the owner. Gave him a bunch of glass/obsidian tumbles, he was impressed. He had a full glass polishing shop too. But no tumblers. He had recently picked up making millefiori glass. He was very proud of the them and you could see why - lots of work. Conclusion, buy cheap import and take a hammer to it. As long as it is annealed properly and has no cracks/few bubbles the cheap stuff will treat you well. He gave me some pricing on custom tumbling stock glass and it is costly. Fair enough, lots of work. He had a dozen 5 gallon buckets out back. It was sorta useless as it was not annealed and full of cracks. He has a hard time getting rid of it. I told him I may one day make a wood fired glass kiln for mass melting glass on the farm here. Probably have to burn a whole tree to melt a giant ingot lol. Guys were in t-shirts and short pants with the doors open and cold wind hurling in, that is a hot business. Gas bill must be incredible. So glad you got to watch some of it. To me it's just fascinating. How much was the custom glass? I imangine it was way more than the stuff you picked up to smash.

fantastic5I need to talk to you. I just did what you did. I placed a bid on an auction site for a play vehicle sight unseen. I have a Toyota Tundra 4WD 2000 w/350,000 miles. I placed a bid on the same machine except an SUV (Sequoia) body. 2007 w/144,000 miles + 4WD. I know the vehicle well mechanically. same engine/drivetrain as the super reliable Tundra truck etc. Vehicle appraised at $8000 less what looks to be minor front end damage like a bashed big front bumper that I was going to replace with a steel red neck bumper. Vehicle in Charlotte and drive able. I want to trick out a Sequoia into off road camper/go anywhere monster. Got 22 hours left on bid. Had to put $400 deposit down. What do you think ? This is similar what I want to make out of it: Missed this until just now. Did you win the Sequoia? Super happy with my F150. Still have some work to do, but 100% drivable (almost from the get go). DH is driving it every day. Turned cold, so he parked his convertible and only wants the truck now. Did you need to hire a proxy for a Charlotte auction? I did for the Texas one, and shipping was almost $1000. Charlotte would be completely worth just taking the risk and driving it home yourself. PM sent - call if you want to.

I asked him how he would make a slab of tightly banded 'fordite' glass and he was a bit challenged as to how to go about it. He could do it if the layers did not have to be the exact same thickness. A say 2 pound chunk may cost a couple hundred dollars. after he explained the process i respected his price. But bear in mind you can saw it into cab slabs and have very low waste, 2 pounds would make a crap load of slabs for cabs. Say $200 and you get 100 cabs out of it; $2 per cab is nothing. Or $2 per tumble for that matter. He was interested in all I was telling him. I think his hand made jewelry pieces were a big part of his income. I could get into a lot of trouble w/that guy. He needs to twist my arm into building a mass melt glass kiln down here on the farm. Like mass melting colored glass stock, he pays out the ear for colored glass.

I silent bid $3500, darn if the last public bid was $3400. I won by $100 !!!!! My first auction ever. Insurance salvage car, drivable. Appraised $8000. 2007 4WD Toyota Sequoia 143,000 miles, damaged front bumper(to be replaced with red neck steel bumper), Lexus 4.7 V8(same vehicle as Toyota Tundra) I'll gut it and turn it into bad azz off road machine. HOWEVER, I still have to wait for the seller to agree to releasing it for that price, it may not have met the reserve price. Will know today, waiting in anticipation @#$%^&. I did a video of the public auction, bear in mind I made a silent bid of $3500, check it out:

I was thinking I would have a better chance getting a lower price getting both a damaged vehicle and a clouded title. Problem with Toyotas is everyone is bidding high on them and frantically. High competition item. Tundra's are plain simply overpriced.

Well, sorta slowing down with working life and starting to want to go on some expeditions, mostly rock hunting. NOT camping near the Rio. I want to have a vehicle I can live a few days at a time in at remote sites. So this vehicle. You western guys can simply go park/camp on your vast resources of BLH land, I am envious. I just got thru breaking most of that glass. What a smorgasbord. First plan of action is to get it rolling and remove the sharp edges. 24 hours and all sharp edges are gone. Got a lot of red glass from a couple of cuts lol. I must say, the import stuff from the discount stores more than serves the purpose for fine glass to tumble. That was the most glass I ever hammered at one sitting. Compared to rocks there is a much lower scrap rate. And learned what type and size of glass that produces the best potential pendant size and shaped tumbles. The insides of some of those vases are much prettier than the outside, so there is two sides to most of those pieces - cool. Their quality and technique of manufacture is very similar to the artisan's technique. Almost a duplicate. About 2/3rd's of it. Tray must be 4 inches deep in glass. A bunch. Cloudy, bad reflection

jamesp - running an small/medium electric kiln isn't really that expensive see this link for example Electric also gives you great temp control, so annealing etc is very easy. Also could give you great control over heat treating of rocks/coral....

Well, the welder gets used heavily and it darn sure gets hot ! Controlling electricity is an easier task, great idea. May even consider building the kiln and buying heater and controls...

It appears the glass lost but not before getting in a few shots(cuts)! Coral has hit veins on 2 occasions, the squirting blood thing... Once I got my wife's leg with coral, another pulser. Feared her. She was not happy. Glass way more sharper than coral. Please use caution. Yes, I won but it got it's ounce. Must say, the glass breaks with much less force. Just wait till it spends the night at 63 RPM with bulk grit, then the glass will know who the boss is.

One bandaid from the wood stove, the one on the pinky spoke back, right on cuticle and ouch. Poor glass, getting ready to torture it in the rotary tumbler. The tumbler will quickly make it harmless.

Loved your excitement in the video I hope you get it!!! Let us know. What auction house was this through? I bought mine from Insurance Auto Auctions. It is complicated. The car is at Copart. China Grove, NC. Maybe a brokerage house ?? The representative bidding was thru Salvage Autos Auction. I think I paid $395 for his dealership license rights to auction for me. High competition item. Tundra's are plain simply overpriced. When I hired the broker to buy the F150 for me he offered a onetime purchase or a years contract. I did the one time purchase, which was a little less than what you paid (if I remember correctly). The F150 was a buy-it-now. IAAI had just started offering BIN sales. Basically a reserve with a very motivated seller. My truck was 14k, but only had 32k miles, so it was a real good deal (even with the new tires and repairs). Truck appraises for 25-28k as it sits right now. So I could have flipped the truck and made about 10k. I think I just got real lucky with the whole transaction. I hope you do too. One interesting note, the hauler who I paid to the trailer the truck from Texas told me that the vehicles that he picks up from IAAI are always as described. He told me that there are several action houses that have very poor reputations for not having accurate descriptions. I wish I had wrote down the ones he told me, because I can't remember which ones they were now.

And wow. 10K ain't no chump change. Will you do this again to make supplemental income ? Or maybe future needed vehicles ?

Ok did a little research. It is about $30.00-$60.00. Not a really valuable piece. It is gonna kill me to say this, but smashing is allowed.
