Hello, I Just joined today and would appreciate some help. Can anyone explain the cause of Bahia agates having half domed shapes in their surface structure? These semi-spheres were sub surface and after several weeks of tumbling with 60/90 grit , they were exposed. Hope someone can help. Cheers, johnw

Cheers, johnw I’m really pretty bad at geology, so I can’t answer your question. Someone here should be able to though. Those Bahia agates sure are pretty though. Welcome to the site. Even if you don’t get an answer to your question we can help you get those agates shiny.

Hi John! Welcome from northern California Maybe a post in the one of the rock categories (with pictures?) would gather more responses and hopefully good answers for you.

johnw Do you have any images that will show us exactly what you are talking about? Before and after? My understanding is the Agates are weathered out of volcanic rock which leaves them in the soil. I have seen some websites that say river washed and they are from the permian time period 252 m - 298 m years ago. So they have been weathering out for 250 million years.

One more: how to attach images? I cannot find the subject under help. Thanks

Finally, here are the images. I would really appreciate any help in getting this hemispherical indentation identified. The agate is from Bahia in Brazil and came from The Rock Shed. I stopped tumbling it after the 60/90 phase since its kinda special. I have some other agates that I will be posting for comments, er, now that is after I have finally figured out how to send pictures:-). Cheers, johnw

Hello, here is another special Bahia agate from the Rock Shed. Not sure if this is an agate or a fossil. So how best to tumble this? All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, johnw

Cheers, johnw I've tumbled a lot of Bahia agate from the Rock Shed and many of them have those circular eyes. I don't get too involved with the geology aspect, other than to be amazed at the many variations of agate, so I'm no help there. I just like to tumble them and make 'em shiny.

Hello Garage Rocker, First, thanks for replying to my post about the agate/fossil picture. Your agate looks great and the polish is awesome. I will get there someday. Can you do me a favor and tell me how you got such a great image to post. It took me a long time to figure out how to get the images to appear and they did not turn out too well. How did you get such a large size to transfer?
Cheers, johnw

How did you get such a large size to transfer? Cheers, johnw John, if you are using the attach photo function here on the forum, you are limited to a 1MB file size. If you want to add larger, more easily viewable photos to your posts, you will need to host your photos on a third party photo hosting site. I'm a big fan of Flickr, as are a good many other members here. Start an account there and add your photos to that site. Once you have done that, it's a matter of copying a file and attaching that file here within your post. There is a share feature on Flickr that allows you to copy the BBC code and then attach it here. It's not hard, but takes a minute to figure out. If you want to go that route, get some images downloaded and send me a PM. I'll walk you through the process to get them posted up here. Welcome to the forum! ETA: you can also share a whole album, if you choose, with a simple link on Flickr. flic.kr/s/aHskVZ42Ch

Hello Again Garage Rocker, thank you for the explanation about getting decent pictures posted. I will sort out getting an account lined up with Flickr and get some pictures downloaded to that site. I will then send you a PM. Err, sorry, but I will need help with sending you a PM, I do not know how to do this. I am a wiz at sending email and taking pictures and answering the phone on my smartphone, but anything else, swoosh, way over my head. it takes time and many tries, but I do get there eventually. Cheers,jw
