I bought a bunch of rhodochrosite before the prices started getting too crazy. I can't replace anything I use for those prices I just bought 10 pounds of top quality, at a unbelievable price. going to keep it for awhile, maybe cab it.

Alrighty, Baker Ranch ... THIS was a true treat to come across. I spent a bunch on these silly things. The sellers actually dug WITH the Geode Kid. Not just at his site, with him! Great stories!! I have lost my sunlight, so just a few pictures for now. Most everything I bought is rough. The potential is off the charts and the beauty remains hidden within. TOP quality specimens. I left very little of this behind. Not sure whether I spent more on these or dino bone, but the amounts would be close (?) I wasn't keeping track of such! group shot - again limited photos due to light getting bad. Heck, I probably couldn't take decent pictures of them anyway! the piece in my hand was $175 one piece here 75 bucks, everything else $100 or more! Could sell any of these pieces for 3-4-5 times what I paid or more. But they won't be sold. Ya might want to do a save the date for my estate sale! Lighting sucks and it's gettin' cold. More later. Hope ya liked 'em. Good stuff still to come! Life Pro Tip The geode kid had many people dig with him. He was famous and he loved meeting people from what I can tell.

captbob I Cali we have e "whale bone" on many beaches. I cannot tell the difference between that and the Utah/Colorado Dino bone. Perhaps color, but all else seems equal.

Life Pro Tip The geode kid had many people dig with him. He was famous and he loved meeting people from what I can tell. I wish I had had such an opportunity. Sure there were good stories there! I don't really know who these people are, but I was asking a couple questions (email) about some cycads I bought last week. The reply was: We did not collect the cycads. We got them from a guy in Worland, Wyoming (who was so excited to have us visit, that he asked the local paper to come and interview/photograph us). He told me that they were from South Dakota. They seem pretty normal to me. I did get one of her CDs to listen to on the drive home. Pretty darn good singer! Think Joan Baez, Diamonds and Rust kinda stuff. What it reminded me of anyway. I don't think it was the being a singer thing that had the guy excited though. No clue. But I'm gonna be getting her other CDs when I go back! Still wish I had met The Geode Kid.

*LOL* Where have I heard that threat before from a wife? Except in my case it was if you leave me with all those "damn" rocks!.
Bob, with gem bone it's all about color and quality. Not a lot of bone shows up here at Texas shows and it's all way expensive. That being said, if it's well agatized, all the cells are well filled in, especially with colorful little fortifications and it's reds and multi colors ( red , yellow and blue combo is spectacular!) I'd expect to pay well over that $15 a pound price point. Those examples with soft hematite cell walls, browns, grays or other earth tones or just plain dark with little blue in the cells are not so dear and I'd not buy any with a lot of pits or fractures unless there are clear areas for cutting. And those I'd not pay over the fifteen per pound mark unless the clean areas were pretty special. Different for a cutter than for a specimen guy. A cutter only cares about how many good cabs he can get from clean areas. A collector wants that entirely clean polishable face showing nice color and pattern throughout.
Was at Q one year and an Aussie guy had this spectacular collection of face polished Queenies. He was talking with another guy about values and I was snooping in on the conversation. I was astounded to hear that when he had his agates appraised for insurance purposes, the appraiser only considered value based on how many cabs could be cut from them. I was thinking anyone who chopped those beauties up for cabs should be hung as I would give them way more value as specimens. Same thing with really fancy hunks of bone....Mel

I had the opportunity to spend a bit of time in the Geode Kids booth many moons ago at "Q". Both guys odd, interesting ducks but man did they know their t-eggs and New Mexico agate. They had also done a lot of digging at the Big Diggins at the time and man they had some of the most spectacularly weird agates from there. The stark white sagenites and some plumes too were off the charts cool. Several bucks a pound too which back them was a buttload of money for rough agate. The Lindbergs " was it red roof?" rockshop was outrageous too. Mountains of Mexico material. If I would have had money to buy lots of rocks in those days, I'da made more money that I ever did on the stock market....Mel
PS: I've hunted a bunch of whalebone too but always found most of it disappointing. Shows nice cells but I've seldom found any that was not earth tones. Had some nice black and blue contrast from the Ventura beach but most I've had was red brown to brown cell walls and white to gray chalcedony filling in the cells. Dead ringer for some of the earth tone dino bone out of Canada but as with pet wood, not anywhere as near colorful as Utah and Colorado bone from those painted sediments they have.

This is one amazing thread. Appears that the sellers know you are a serious buyer now. They know you are knowledgeable and will give their collection the utmost care. They are offering up some items not for sale to the public. Those items may come with a huge price tag. Or, they may give you an amazing deal, since you have already given them a lot of money. All I can say is go with your gut. If you like it, it is rare for you to find, if it is good quality, if it is reasonably priced (for what it is), then go for it! In all likelihood, you have been their best customer. How do you think they would be for negotiating a package deal on some things?

In all likelihood, you have been their best customer. How do you think they would be for negotiating a package deal on some things? Thanks Fern, very insightful post. Yes, they knew I wasn't some lookie loo within minutes of my showing up last weekend. I identified rocks that he figured no one knew and I'm pretty sure he was impressed - but not nearly as I was by their collection. And soon by them. They had folks show up when I was there last week that left with 20 or 30 bucks worth of crap rocks. Those people had NO idea what was there! Hell, I don't even understand what all they have. Well, maybe I do, but I'm just astounded by such a collection. I'll get there. *smile* I had never met anyone of this caliber (rock wise) other than Mel. And they are just "normal" folks but with rock knowledge and stories (been there done that) that there is no way I can ever have. I envy that more than most anything else I can think of. Even more than the rocks themselves. ETA: I don't truly envy anyone's collection. I appreciate it! I treasure rocks. Would rather have my rock collection than fancy houses or cars or a Picasso or whatever some other folks might consider worthwhile. I want this collection to grow until I can't collect anymore. These days that just means better and better quality rocks. I've run out of room for rocks that aren't the best I can find. "How do you think they would be for negotiating a package deal on some things?" I already tried to buy the house with ALL the rocks. Didn't work. They are keeping the "good stuff". *grumble* This collection gives me an opportunity to add to my collection. Not sure that I'm going to get any "deals" over there, but I appreciate the opportunity to even see it. Being able to purchase some of it and make it mine is a huge plus. I will see these rocks for years to come and remember these people. They have already told me that I was their "best" customer for this sale so far. And I plan to blow last week out of the water come Saturday. Such opportunities are very few in my world. I shall not squander it. I'm sure that when I make it to the Tucson show I'll spend more, but it won't mean as much to me as this does. Or nearly as much as Mel's collection has meant to me. (THANK YOU SIR!) Impossible to explain.

I agree with with Tela; I think almost all of us get it. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your treasures and the treasures yet to come.
These people kind of remind me of a guy in our club who has a specimen collection to die for. It boggles the mind.

Home. Just a quick funny for right now (YES I scored large) I called home when I was pulling out of their driveway over there to let the wife unit know I was homeward bound and when to expect me. The boy dog was barking when I called and I asked what he was barking about.
"The mail lady is here and she is delivering boxes of rocks!"
I'm pretty sure my wife was NOT amused.
I thought that was funny as heck, but waited until I disconnected the call before I start l@ughing. (can't spell 1aughing here without getting that stoopid smiley face thing)
Another banner day. Bigger than last time. I'm beat. Not sure that I'll do pictures before Monday when She Who Must Be Ignored goes to work. Will see.
beer thirty ....
