Back in 1988 I was stationed on the USS Hawkbill (SSN 666). We did a Westpac which was a 6 month deployment over towards Asia. We spent most of our time out at sea including a couple of times that we were out at sea for about 2 months. Following one of the 2 month cruises, we pulled in to Yokuska, Japan. I called my parents. The phone was disconnected. I called one of my sisters. The phone was disconnected. I called my other sister. The phone was disconnected. I ended up calling a friend of the family to find out that everyone had moved while I was out at sea! I still give them all grief about trying to get rid of me.

They were just jealous that you were having so much fun punching holes in the water. Did they move to the West Coast to be closer to you?
DBF!!!

It was sure an odd feeling. Internet was not there yet, and it takes time to get the snail mail when you pull in. 2 of the moves were job related. The other was short distance but you didn't keep phone numbers back then. We sure are spoiled with our toys now. I remember having about 20 dollars in quarters to make long distance calls on the pay phones at those overseas bases. Great times though.

AGSS-318... The Baya 69-71
The only tumbling I did usually involved me falling out of the rack during storms (had to ride all of them out on the surface)... Everyone I knew said I had rocks for brains!

Everyone I knew said I had rocks for brains! We were able to ride out storms beneath the surface. If you can feel a storm a couple of hundred feet below the surface, you don't want to be on the surface. I was always amazed by the number of guys that would be seasick on the way out of port, even if I thought it was calm. The instant we submerged they were all better. Of course the shape of the modern subs is not conducive to riding well on the surface.

DH was old nuke. He went deeper. Did he glow in the dark too? Ah TMI. Nukes definitely stand out in my book. You can't make it through that program and be stupid. (Of course I would say something like that being a Reactor Operator.)

Your story is funny now but I bet it wasn't back then I would of freaked out if that happened. I was also in the Navy, so I know what it was like, I spent more $ on calling cards then anything else (well, except maybe alcohol). It sucked when I couldn't get ahold of my parents, would have to wait for the next port. God, those were some fun times though.

My mother recently commented about her display case, that I had given her more of the items in it from my travels than she had gotten herself. But yeah the alcohol flowed pretty freely and there were some ports I really enjoyed.

I was the odd one in the Army, I never called home, only wrote a few letters home... Think this about the sea stories he can tell you. There are probably five stories he will not tell you for each one he does because of the information involved. And wow he went through the harder side of Nuclear Power School. Probably the hardest school in the nation. Not so much the material involved or anything, so much as the speed at which you must master it. The enlisted side probably qualifies as the second hardest for the same reason. You absorb the amount of technical information involved in a 4 year degree in 6 months. There was a fairly high failure rate, and the failures that did not cop an attitude were usually top performers in their fields, hence it was expected they would still do well.

More amazing that you all went into different services than the letters. Was it no one wanted to follow in the others footsteps?

Wasted a lot of money Yeah I wasted a lot of paychecks in the bars. Was still great times. I guess the bonus is I burned myself out on the partying and have basically quit drinking for years. Long enough I don't like the taste anymore.

We always went our way, in may case I looked the three years in the Army vs four in the others.

One of the ports I spent a day roaming around was in South Korea (no names mentioned...). Along the main dirt road of merchants were hundreds of tables displaying tumbled stones and cab jewelry. It looked like there was a mine around there and the families would go to the city and sell what they were allowed to pickup in the scrabble heaps. I could have come away with countless "treasures"... but alas...at that time I had little interest in the lapidary hobby. My loss!
