I'm really happy for you John! Your setup is really coming together. I'll be counting on you for help after all this experience when I get a saw. Ron

Hey John. Nice equipment. What size blade does the slab saw use? I'm still playing with mine and tweaking the adjustments. Using a saw instead of a hammer sure makes for better looking tumbling rough, you agree?
have fun, Ed

Sandsman way cool. I especially like the two wheel arbor. I would go with a 100 grit diamond wheel, and the other a rubber expandable drum. My reasons, the diamond wheel can cut "softer" than a grit wheel, and the rubber drum uses sanding belts. The belts are very durable, I have a 1200 that I got in Portland Ore., four years ago that I still use. It came in a pack of 10 and I have nine left. With the diamond wheel, the felt pressure can really be modified. I can press down, or float. It has shown no appreciable wear. I also only grind from the border to the top. Less fracture. With the rubber drum, you can really bear down. The 100 grit does the shaping and the drum fines it down. Really good stuff. Good luck, and good grinding.

hi all ---ed its a 10inch slab saw and a 8inch trim saw id like to get a 12 or 14 compact size slab saw just to be able to cut alittle bigger rock, but i only had a prob once i found a 15 lb piece of flintridge flint it allmost fit but i ended up breakin it up alittle, and yes if i find something i realy like and dont wanna loose alot i cut it on the trim saw saves alotta waste
doc i was gonna try that with the drum when i bought the other wheel the guy threw in a box of belts assorted sizes 10 or 15 of them and it seems like it would be easyer to finish a dome with the expandable drum then trying it on a hard wheel

I so prefer the belts to hard wheels. The hard wheels chatter on fine work, and the belts can be pushed into. I also use the belts when I do knife blades and handles. Try it, you like it. Indian Jewelers supply has good drums, both 6" and 8". I also switched to metal dops instead of wood dops. I went to a leather belt rather than leather disc for polishing. The leather belt fits directly on the drum. You just have to keep it dry.
