This came up in another thread. I thought it would make an interesting thread of it's own. What does your sweetie (or children, or friends) think about your rock habit? Dh isn't really into rocks. He keeps up, but it's not his thang. He's learning names through osmosis and has definitely decided that he doesn't like anything with spots. He does like pieteriste, lapis and charoite, though. If I show hm on OJ he turns up his nose and says- I know what that is and flicks the cab away. LOL! But, he is very supportive, in general, and let's me keep too much stuff around. Of course, I don't have the tonnage that a lot of you have. (*cough, cough* captbob)

She who shall be obeyed is a very long suffering woman. "Patience of a saint" comes to mind. She will appreciate your rocks more when and if you ever have to sell them. Hell, you could charge admission just for the sight see'ers. I'd pay for a tour.

2 years ago when I first met my girlfriend, now fiancee, she would collect rocks on all our outings and they were starting to build up a bit. I had always been interested in tumbling so I thought it would be a great idea to get her a small tumbler for Christmas. Well, she has never touched the tumbler and it has taken over my hobby life. She is fairly interested when a new batch comes out of polish, but not so much interested in the process to get them there. She asks some questions about it all, but I think she is just trying to show some interest for my sake. When I am inspired to stop the van and hunt rocks, she groans about it at first and then helps me out.

My ex never showed an interest. He would make stupid comments about my collection. He still makes them to this day with my jewelry attempts-He is an #@#, so it doesn't bother me anymore, My daughter lets me do what I do. She isn't interested in every rock I bring home (or succulents) but she has a good eye for art and appreciates the beauty of mother nature. She will dig for rocks with me when we go snorkeling in the pits back home, but wont go with me here. She has banned me from buying more succulents and is almost at the banning stage of rocks, until I can get through what I already have. Little does she know, I have more coming ; )

My wife puts up with my rocks and likes when I make her jewelry. She teaches earth science to middle school students, so she knows more about how rocks form than I do. She doesn’t have any interest in playing with rocks. She will look for rocks on a beach with me, but only for about an hour. I’m careful to not spend too much more than I earn selling stuff, so that’s not a problem. Her number one problem with my hobby is the noise from the tumblers. When it’s quiet in the house, there’s always the soft sound of rocks rolling in the basement. She tolerates it, but doesn’t like it.

When we go to a show or sale my wife makes me buy more then I planed on. I make pendant and earring sets that both my wife and two daughter wear most every day. Each year for Christmas they each get sets made from the same rock, glass, or bowling ball. The girls have about 100 sets and the wife has over 175. Sure is fun that she enjoys it as much as I do..........................................MrP

I had to look it up as well, even though I'm not in Rio Linda. Yep, I know where that phrase comes from. Your link didn't produce any results for me...blank definition, so I even did some extra work. My wife tolerates my tumbling habit, though I am not deeply into it in terms of equipment and material (a tile saw, 3 tumblers and I'm guessing about 3 hundred pounds of material or so). She likes looking at the finished product and displaying them in different vessels around the home. She went to Quartzsite this year with me, and it was the first time for both of us. To a degree, I was kind of surprised that she wanted to go, but then again I wasn't surprised. She really likes stone-based jewelry, as opposed to precious gems (that's a good thing for me ), and we knew there would be plenty for her to look at. As the two days at the shows wore on, I actually found myself waiting for her to look at stuff instead of the other way around. She had a great time there, and she's even expressed an interest in trying traditional and cold forge wire wrapping. She also bought a few inexpensive cabs to work on and try her hand on different things. The true test, however, was when I bought 4 lbs of condor agate nodules to cut and tumble. If it bothered her, she didn't say anything, though she is the type to do so, as she looks at things fairly pragmatically. Heck, I actually surprised myself by this purchase and she just went with the flow. We haven't done a hounding trip together, but I actually don't hound too much myself. However, as long as the shows are around, we'll try to do those. She's already expressed in interest in going to Tucson next month and Prescott later in the year. It could be a good year. Dave

Dave Sounds very promising for you. Wait till she makes her own jewelry. You'll be all kindsa busy looking for the bling. eta- meant to add-- DH will do shows with me. Not that there are many around.

Same as most replies above: DILLIGAF! Dearest will be willing to give things away to friends and family and occasionally talks to them about me doing what I do, BUT never ever has she worn anything I made. The only exceptions are things that I designed and had a jeweler set it in gold. My daughters do wear pieces from time to time. The older one likes Pietersite, and the younger one continues to wear a piece of pink jade (she broke it and glued it back together, too many times that I can count over the years, but continues to refuse to take a replacement). The younger one has a boyfriend who is into making trinkets, so there is new competition now too. The upside on that is that I can do basically any design that is to my liking, and don't have to worry about anyone else.....

Don't have a problem in my house. DH is also into cutting and loves to hang in the saw shop slabbing away. He'd actually rather slab rock than cut. We met when we were both members of the Opal Auctions forum. We met up a couple of years after DH joined, and I moved to Arizona from Chicago to marry him. aDave - We have a booth at the Prescott show every year. Stop by and say hi when you come!
