Make sure the groove and lid are clean. I use an old toothbrush to clean the groove. I also squeeze the top of the barrel after lid is seated to make sure lid is in the groove. But sometimes they still leak a little. If it is not a big leak I just it run it will seal it's self. I use the 3 lb. barrels.

Make sure that it’s not worn through the center. They don’t last long and have to be replaced. I have both Lortone and Thumblers tumblers. The Lortone never leaks.

The plastic lid fits in a groove and a large Oring fits in a groove on the outside above the lid area. Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong barrel design. But when my barrels started leaking, I bought a Oring that was just a little bit smaller in diameter or just replaced The old one with the new one. If im thinking of the wrong design, I'm sorry Have a good day

spiceman, I had the same problem as you w/leaking barrels, on two 3 lbrs. we were given. Bought 1/4" O-rings that just fit inside the barrels, same O.D. as barrel I.D., worked great.

Best bet would be to get a Thumler's Model B. It has a metal barrel, which seals with 6 wing nuts. Liner and gasket are both rubber, so there is little wear. But if you have to use the standard barrels on one of their more affordable models, I would consider the cost of extra lids and barrel retainers as being part of the cost of ownership. If you want something REALLY CHEAP to buy and own, then a Lortone QT series would probably be the best bet. But don't expect them to last forever either.

I have had the same problem. Easy to get grit in the groove, and then the leaks happen. My stage one barrels (I bought separate barrels for each stage) have had the lid wear through as well. I have been thinking of replacing this machine, but have not yet decided on what I'd replace it with. I have a Lortone QT-66 I got on Craigslist, their barrel arrangement and sealing is significantly better. Try stones/grit/stones/water when you fill the barrels, so you don't splash grit up into the groove.
