I've seen many a thread about bizarre or unique finds, so I thought I'd share here.
My wife was cleaning at her mom's home and came across the item in the photo below. I've never seen anything like it, but I had some thoughts about what it might be. Based upon input from roy and Sabre52 it appears to be a chunk of palm root, most likely from California.
The interesting thing is that my wife's mom was never into rocks, and we don't have any background on the piece - other than input from the experts here. This particular item is a bit larger than a standard brick. Trying to figure out what to do with it. Enjoy.

Ok I've been staring at that for about 10 minuets, looking at all the cool images in it. That is a fantastic piece, whatever it is. Unusual thing to have---maybe something her dad picked up and mom hung onto it? Your wife never saw it before?

If it were me, I'd keep it as a display piece. Cool find and way too nice to cut up.

Very complex and beautiful. Love the story behind it. wish i could be more help on ID, but am clueless. Does not look like Palm to me. Appears to be some type of fossilized material, though.

Unusual thing to have---maybe something her dad picked up and mom hung onto it? Your wife never saw it before? I actually like the piece as well. I was amazed when my wife brought it home. My wife had never seen it before at her mom's house. It was a total surprise for her, and she had never seen it when she was growing up. It's a mystery. Mom won't be able to offer any help, as she is deeply into alzheimer issues. No telling where it came from, other than what was learned from Sabre52 that it probably came from CA. My wife's dad was a hoarder of sorts, so there's no telling where it came from. As an aside, there are other rocks on the property that obviously came from a lapidary due to cuts and such. I just haven't had a chance to dig into them.

I could see it being palm root. Those large circles look like palm roots to me. The local SoCal palm root i am used to seeing is more brown than red so it may be from elsewhere. Pretty stuff though.

Definitely Fossil foliage, and most likely palm root. I have similar stuff but with a lot less red. super nice.

What a cool piece with a great mystery attached. Definitely a keeper. I second keeping it as a specimen, or at the very least, only taking a small slab off.

Just saw this. Oh my what a dynamite chunk of palm root! Outstanding display specimen.
I'd grind the nub left from the saw off and face polish it leaving it whole. That really is a killer piece!

I would cut off one end at an angle and make stand up out of it. Nice specimen.

The red colors really threw me off. Never realized that palm could be red. Never have seen anything like this.

Red palm root occurs at several California locations, though it's more often found in earth tones. Castle Butte, Yermo, Sperry Wash, Ogilby sp? etc. My wife unit has a huge boulder of red palm bog with scattered roots from Yermo in her garden and I sold one of our members some nice Castle Butte red, actually pink, material. My pics of it are hostage at Pee bucket but maybe Bob will post a pic sometime....Mel

What a good looking piece! I’d show it to your wife’s mother anyway. Might trigger a memory. Good luck and thanks.

This is a great idea and not something I originally considered. I appreciate the suggestion from you and others who noted to keep it as a display piece. Sounds like I have plan for this thing. Best regards. Dave

That's a beautiful piece, Dave. I, too, think it would be best served kept intact. If you can manage to get it face polished, even better!
