I tried using one of my cameras for doing videos but it became a nightmare to do all the converting, so I got a pretty inexpensive Sony video camera. Not sure it is up to the task, though. Spent half the day yesterday trying to get some good video with my amateur set up. Then another half trying to figure the basics of Hit Film Express- a free, but very powerful video editing program. Then I used another freebie, Handbrake, to compress from 68mb to 12mb. It's nothing I want to share, yet- really rough, but getting there. But, I was wondering what do any of you use and do you have any pointers?
I am having a problem with a dark shadow line running up the screen to the top and then starting from the bottom again. I believe it is due to the strobe effect of the led and/or the fluorescent light I am using. I'm going to try another light today. Anyone know what I am talking about or how to fix it?

I'm going to start by stating I don't have any useful advice on this subject but I did google 2days ago... What do people use to shoot their YouTube videos? I watched several videos that may help you with your dilemma. Hope you find what you're looking for. I think you shooting how to videos is an excellent idea!!!

Yeah, I was looking at a LOT of videos yesterday. I did figure out how to do a lot of the editing on you tube. HitFilm has lots of learning videos.

I purchased a program a few days ago (can’t remember the name at the moment) that actually captures streaming video in hd that has some cool editing video with it. I got it so I could capture How To (Streaming Only) Videos I’ve actually purchased!! I wanted to be able to put them on dvd and have them without having to have internet.

The old Movie Maker doesn't work in Win 10, but there is a free replacement available in the Win 10 store (or go to the Microsoft website). There is also a feature in the Windows Photos app (comes installed with Windows) that allows you to mix multiple images and videos. There was also supposed to be an improved version of Movie Maker in the works called "Story Maker," but not sure whether it has been released or if it was rebranded as "Story Remix"? On the open source side, there is Shot Cut.

Thanks, I'll look into those. I'm working on trying to get the white balance right now. I found that the halogen and led lights produced the "strobe effect". The incandescent and the fluorescent OTT light don't do it. I figured it was the fluorescent but it wasn't. I'll try to post a quick demo I've been working on.

Some of the newer LED lights that have coated bulbs don't have the flicker problem. Some LED bulbs also do a better job than others in converting AC to DC (same problem as with some fluorescents). Might have to try a few brands. I've found that the spotlights with no coating and dimmable LEDs have the most problem with flicker.
BTW, I think the Story Maker functions were added to Photos in last autumn's big update. Just run Photos, select the images and videos you want to edit or stitch together, then click Create to see the video remix functions.

Turned out it was the overhead halogen. I used a small OTT light desklamp and it worked great. My (cheap) Sony camera has a really good manual white balance. I got a pretty good video.

rockjunquie, that's great! First, congrats on the wonderful cobaltocalcite and the great wrap. Second on your quick mastery of the video process. I've been struggling to make gem videos for my website but have been plagued with many problems, most from my lack of digital skills. I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks. Tell me about the need for compression. I'm using a Cannon Vixia HG20 and I'm plagued by off-color videos even though they're shot in natural daylight. I've set the WB properly and they look good on my monitor, but when I upload to YouTube horrible colored shadowing often appears that distorts the stones' true color. Could it be due to YT compressing an HD video to whatever protocol it uses? It's driving me nuts.

There's a few things I'd like to do differently next time. My BIL said, "With Youtube they compress the dynamic range to save bandwidth. The colors end up being less vibrant than "real" HD." That's all I know about it. It seemed to me that they messed with the contrast whatever they did. It looks higher than my video does. My camera is a pretty cheap one. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R5LH9HO/ I'm really surprised by how well it did. I took some of some ammolite and it did have problems with that because of the intense fire. I really have no clue about your trouble. Maybe you can contact Youtube and ask them for help. Ya never know.

We use AVS software for editing and creating videos and it does just about everything. I can recommend it. Their unlimited license is $59, which entitles you to upgrades forever. The only catch is that they license it to a specific machine, so if your computer is really old you'd probably be better off waiting until you buy a new one before purchasing the AVS suite (avs4you.com).
