Thank you alikat213. I was reading some back threads where you tumbled a black agate or something and there was great discussion on what it was. Did you ever finish it and determine the genesis of the stone? I also saw you asked what "pitch" was and I did not see the correct answer, so here it is:" pitch is what a baseball player does when he throws the ball." See, so now you know. Hey, it's early and I could not resist. Cheers, johnw

Conversely, it could be black corundum??? both 9+on Moh's scale. Just sayin. but wadda I know, I just do big crazy's and Bahia's. Good luck anyway. Cheers, johnw

Hi John! Great work on these, especially the bird with the flower in the background !!(I'm assuming this is the piece you mentioned that took a year to complete). Nice job fitting those feathers in too. I like birds - I want to try doing one if I live long enough.

Nice job fitting those feathers in too. I like birds - I want to try doing one if I live long enough. Thanks Garry, I appreciate you comments, and yes, the bird was that piece with the flower. That said, I am aware that my attempt at intarsia does not hold a candle to your work. Your joints and intersections are world class and I can make this observation since had an opportunity to study the process of intarsia and the techniques involved at “Opificio delle Pietre Dure” in Florence in the late 70’s and started my work in 1980. The sample of my work shown was my first and last foray into the process. After I completed the bird I was assigned to Asia and never resumed the work. Now, I am too old to start the process and have focussed on tumbling Bahia’s as my hobby since I retired in 2012 and was a happy camper. Well, err, that was the plan until I saw Donald Pulitzers video on youtube showing his “Most Spectacular Agate in the World” at 43 pounds measuring 14 inches in diameter and I was hooked. The Big Crazy’s came along shortly after I saw the video.…………………I know, I know, too much detail but what the heck, I am among friends and that's what friends do, we share our experiences. Cheers, johnw
