Here are some pics from our trip. This first one is of the whole group before we started out. I should have taken an AFTER pic. We looked a whole lot worse for the wear! BShultz and Brenda - really nice folks! Bob and "the girls". How lucky is he to be surrounded by we three beautiful rockhounding women! ;D Barbara's haul My haul The golden piece at the top left is a fist sized piece of Golden Palm Wood, the piece below it is agatized palm wood. We found lots of smaller pieces of the golden wood, also small pieces of red and red and golden palm wood, and a whole bunch of petrified wood! There was also tons of beatiful sandstone. I brought home several really pretty chunks of it for my rock/cactus garden. This last one has nothing to do with rocks, but I think it's neat. And, it will also give you an idea of what the country is like where we were rock hunting. This is an old cattle feeder. I love the pitchfork on the roof. And all those lovely green things around it have zillions of stickers that hurt when you run into them!

We really did have a fun day. Met some really nice folks and found a lot of really neat rocks. Everybody said the golden wood takes a beautiful polish. I can't wait to get some of mine done.
And, I forgot to tell ya'll that Barbara and I made a haul on some really nice slabs too! The guy that set the trip up had a bunch of slabs in the back of his truck. After the hunt and everybody else had left, we were talking to him and ask if we could buy a few of his slabs. He said make me an offer - heck, we had no idea what kind of offer to make, so we told him to make an offer. He said $20 for all of them! We jumped on that like a duck on a june bug. We each took half the pile - 23 slabs each. Some of the were pretty big, most were about fist size and all of them pretty. 46 nice slabs for $20 - what a deal! I feel kinda guilty.
We were both green with envy hearing about all the 12", 14", 18" slab saws, the grinders, etc. that some of these folks have.
Barbara is the tall one. I always knew she was taller than me, but I really never realized how much taller until I saw that pic.

James, we got a whole lotta wood, that's for sure, but not sure it's a lifetime's worth. But, we know where we can find more! ;D

Yep, I missed this thread all together. That is a great looking group of rock lovers. It is always nice to be around other people who have the sickness ;D . Good idea with the nail aprin Barbara, pockets for goodies. Texas is the land of rock, wish I lived closer. Sure looks like you all had a super day. If that is the same pet wood I've seen from down there, it has a kind of sparkle when polished, real pretty. Great pics, nice haul! Later, Don

I know I'm a newbie here, but I didnt think Texas had any rocks. I live in Houston (actually Sugar Land), and have never seen a rock that was not imported, or a broken up peace of concrete.
Next time you guys head out, I'd love to tag along.

Hi Jeff, although I have never rockhunted around Houston, I know Houston has one of the biggest Gem and Mineral Clubs in the state. If you contact them they can probably tell you where the rock are in that area. Houston being close to the Gulf I'm not sure what kind of rocks might be there. Texas is home to a great variety of topagraphy from beaches to deserts to mountainous to flat land and then some. When the topagraphy changes so do the minerals found there. Yep there's rock in them there hills. Bob

As a matter of fact, one of our members, Noosh, lives in Houston. Perhaps if he sees this thread he will tell us where the rocks are around that area. Bob

Hi All, The nail apron worked out really well, but it wasn't my idea. One of the guys that was there had brought some extras, so I borrowed one. When it was full, I transferred the rocks to my backpack, and kept on huntin'. That worked out really well until about the 2nd time I emptied the nail apron into the backpack. After that, I had a great deal of difficulty standing back up after stooping down to pick up another rock! I consider myself to be pretty strong, especially for being a girl, but them rocks are HEAVY!
Jeff, you've got to be kidding! No rocks in Texas? You must never have visited the Hill Country. We have practically nothing here but rocks, and some of them are pretty cool!
Can't wait until we can go on another hunt! It was great!
Barbara

My father, when he has passed, wants his ashes to be spread in the hill country. Though not from that part of Texas originaly, he considers it to be the most beautiful part of the state. He says he wants to "help the bluebonnets grow" there. He's a wonderful man.

Jeff2, you should get the books Rockhounding Texas and Gem Trails of Texas. West Texas is a rockhounders paradise. Agate, quarz, pet. wood and palm wood, all sorts of fossils, jasper, calcite crystals, marble, llanite, topaz and hemitite can be found in certain places in Central and East Texas. Laredo/Rio Grande agates along the Rio Grande from West Texas all the way down to Brownsville.
I didn't know there were so many places in Texas to find agate and jasper. In fact, I just discovered when I got out my Rockhounding Texas book, that some of the rocks I have been calling flint are actually chocolate agate. Now, I gotta go back through all my flint and determine what is flint and what is chocolate agate!

Thanks for the tips everybody, I have never ventured out the west texas, or the hill country. Which is kind of strange considering that I have lived here off and on for 15 years.
I guess whevever I do take a vacation I hop on a plane and fly somewhere with snow.

Fabulous. You are indeed a lucky bunch of folk being able to meet up like that and go tripping. Great. Wish I was there.
