I have tried to send shorty a PM twice with these pics, but I keep getting told he doesn't exist! Weird, since I got a PM from him and hit the reply to respond to his PM. Anyhow, hope ya'll will bear with me on this. I am going to make shorty a walking stick and he wanted to see the sticks I already have cut and somewhat ready to finish. Shorty, the first four sticks on the left have been sanded and are ready to be cut to the proper length and the finishing touches put on. This is a close up of the wood. They are all Texas cedar and strong. I have tested them various ways. I will use a tung oil/polyurethane finish that will bring out the grain of the wood and give them a bit of a shine, but not like a varnish shine. Although if you want a real shiny varnish type finish, I can do that too. To make it the length that will be comfortable for you and to do the top, I need to know how you will carry/hold it. Like this - the length here won't matter, but I will need to know at what height you will be gripping it so I can put a "handle" there - or I can just leave it plain - whatever you want. Or like this? If you will carry it like this, I need to know what length to cut the stick so it will be right height. Also, I will finish off the top with something that will be comfortable and not irritate the palm of your hand. Also, I need to know about what diameter you would like. The smallest of these sticks are approximately 1" diameter, the largest about 2-1/2" to 3". Also, it's hard to find a stick with the same diameter from top to bottom, although some pictured are close. I like the not so straight sticks, that's why I cut several crooked ones. Sometimes, with me, it's "the weirder, the better!" ;D I haven't made a "custom" stick yet so you will be my guinea pig. Don't make the mistake of telling me you like Elvis or it might be so gaudy you'd be embarrassed to walk out the house with it. ;D llana

Great sticks llana, I love walkin sticks. I have some twisty ones a friend of mine cut and finished. He supplys me sticks and I supply him arrrowheads, it works out great. The stone on the end is a good idea, I've been wanting to make custom cabs for the ends of mine too. I think it would really make a super finishing touch on them. Make sure you post a finished product pic when you get it done if you can shorty, Don

Theres not a lot I can do though as the boards are hosted by another company.

Andy, I have never had a bit of problem logging in. Or any other time actually. Trying to send shorty a PM was the first problem I have ever encountered. Shorty, boy, you are easy to please! Better be careful 'cause I might just make you walking stick with legs out of one of those funky ones on the right end of the pic. ;D Kim, wonder if I used one of those funky ones I could shoot better! Hey, if two heads are better than one, two sticks gotta be better than one. Of course, I do have to admit that back in the days when I did some serious drinkin' and pool shootin', I sometimes saw two sticks and two cue balls. When I started seein' those two cue balls, it was time to put up the stick 'cause I was way too drunk to shoot! Then is when I really got in trouble ' cause I'd be lookin' around for some cute cowboy to flirt and dance with. More than once I zeroed in on one whose wife or girlfriend had just gone to the bathroom, but came back just in time to catch me flirting with her man! Surprised I never got one of those sticks busted over my head. donrob, I love walkin' sticks too. My favorite one is the second from the left - it became my snake stick when we went rock hounding last weekend. Gotta poke around in that brush with a snake stick before ya' go puttin' your hand down there to pick up a rock!

Have you ever taken a torch over your sticks? If you do it quickly it darkens the wood and brings out the grain. You can vary your darkness by how many times you go over it.

I haven't even thought of that. But, now that you mentioned it, I will try it. All the wood in the rec. hall here is done that way and it's really neat looking.
It's so stinkin' hot here, they might just fry if I put them outside in the sun. ;D 105 degrees Monday, broke all the temp. records for this time of year. Our normal is 89 and we are already in the high 90's and 100's! Gonna be a long, hot summer.

If you are going to put a sphere on top of the walking stick, I would suggest that the top is carved a little concave so the sphere fits in better and you can attach it better. Tami

Shorty, your walking stick is almost finished. It's lookin' good - at least I think so! Put some stones on it today. Need to let the glue dry for a day or so, then sand it lightly and put another couple of coats of tung oil/polyrethane. Had some help with it today. I babysat my neice's 19 month old son and he was helping. I would put dab of glue on the stick, then set the stone. The minute I looked away to get another stone, he would take the one I just put on off and hand it back to me. Needless to say, I didn't get a whole lot done until I put him down for his nap. May have a rockhound in that boy. I had several ziplocs of small rocks and he was just fascinated by them. He says a few words and added the word ROCK to his vocabulary today. He'd pick up on of the bags and I would tell him rocks. After about the third time, he reached over and grabbed a handful I had on the table, looked up at me and said ROCKS! When his mom and grandpa got home, he grabbed a handful, held his hand open to show them and said Rocks! Decided I am going to have to go through all my rocks and find one big enough that he can't get it in his mouth and give him his own rock. Of course, he'll probably think it's a ball and throw it for the dogs! And Max will run after it because he'll think it's a golf ball. ;D llana
