I have always loved rocks....earth eggs I call them. I was going to get my son a rock tumbler and found out they are over 100 dollars and decided ...no. I recently saw a rock tumbler Lortone 3lb for $50 used about 4 times and was considering buying it but thought I would check with others who know more about what I need to ask as far as being knowledgeable about questioning the seller first. My son is a young adult and works on construction sites where he finds agates..etc.

Welcome aboard! If you are interested in tumbling, you will probably outgrow a 3a real quick. I don't tumble rocks, but I have a lortone for tumbling jewelry. Not a lot can go wrong with them. Mine has been going strong for a very long time. I know some others here will chime, too. We have, literally, world class tumblers here.

The Lortone 3A is a very good machine, reliable, not very noisy.
Any extra barrels come with it? Lots of us have a second barrel kept strictly for the polish stage. Anything else come with it -- grit, rough(untumbled stones)? Was it exposed to the weather?
Check the condition of the cord, and check for the presence of rust. Barrel should still feel somewhat flexible, not brittle.
Good luck!

It's a good machine to start with and see if you like the process. Can always add more tumblers to the stable later.
