Yippee for warmer weather! Spring always feels so good :-)
I especially like the tree with dendritic leaves in the jasper.

Beautiful greens there! Here comes a question from someone without much pet. wood experience, but what characteristics show you that it's pet. wood?
Also, great jasper. When I lived out west, always underestimated jaspers & browsing this site has really showed me that was a mistake. So many interesting patterns, 'scenery' like in your last slab.

The exterior of the material, shows the definite pattern with petwood.. It' a rare color also...

Some but not all show the growth rings one would expect to see. A lot of Hampton Butte is more like a limb cast and like Fossilman says you have to go by what the outside looks like. I do have some that show growth rings. this piece does show them aa bit. not the best example to show the rings. The small photo shows the growth rings pretty, I need to find more Hampton like this one.

Gotcha, thanks to both for the lesson 👍. Makes sense that the outside would be the most reliable place to see wood texture.
Great pics woodman!
Think I was out at Hampton Buttes once but didn't put in enough effort to find anything good & not enough experience with wood.

It can be hard to find anything worthwhile, the first time I went I found nothing worth keeping. The fun is in the looking.

I have been to Hampton Butte three times, first two was kind of a skunk, found stuff, but nothing to brag about. The 3rd time I studied where past hounders were digging, so I got right into the middle of a dig, where nobody had pushed any dirt, "BINGO", I found seven solid pieces of wood and some agate... I have three more pieces that I can cut, one is a round....(About four inches)..

The eastern Oregon Jasper sure has some picture options to it depending on it's orientation. And the Montana is a stunner!
