My grandson's girlfriend is Chinese from Shanghai. She is very, very educated and Westernized and speaks better English than I do. They have been dating online for over a year and she has visited twice. This past weekend she was here. She brought my husband and I a beautiful porcelain tea set with the coolest glaze I have ever seen. Of course, the presentation was beautiful, too. I have been researching gifts for her and her mother. The act of gift giving is a very big deal there. I found out that porcelain is a gift for perspective in laws. I'm getting her mother a Parker pen, red lacquer with gold trim (for luck and prosperity) and some traditional Shanghai candies known as the perfect gift. I'm also getting some famous chocolate covered Virginia Peanuts, which are awesome as a local gift. I'll be getting his girlfriend a few things, too. But I have to put a lot of thought into it. His girlfriend's family are extremely well off. They have showered the grandkids with gifts, so I need to choose carefully. Nothing need be expensive. In Chinese culture, it is all about the thought behind it.

seriously? How could you possibly find a better gift that those you create yourself and show us here? I did give Sophia a pendant from a stone (rhodochrosite) that my grandson picked out. I don't know enough about her mother to choose a pendant for her. Maybe I can ask Sophia....

Love the glaze on the teapot!
Definitely ask her! Your wraps are so beautiful and professional looking. The fact that you made it and put thought into the design will make it very special to her.

I asked Sophia last night. She definitely pointed me in the right direction. I'm going with pietersite. Unless I can figure a US stone to meet the requirements. I have till June.
