I'm new so be kind and correct me if I describe it poorly! The rock is green throughout. There is a nodule of a much paler green. I think the pics describe the colors very accurately. The cleavage looks flaked. It appears to be a bit translucent to about 1mm. The penny should give you relative size of this rock and it feels to be the weight of a baseball. There also is what looks like a fossil impression, but I am a novice in that, as well. What are your thoughts? Thanks! Welcome to our little universe! Sorry, I can't help on the id, but you gave a great description and pictures. Have you tried any kind of hardness test? See the stickies in this section for some ideas.

Going just by appearance, olivine peridotite and serpentine are possibilities. Do a test for mohs hardness as rockjunquie suggested (you don't need a special kit, but can do this using other known rocks and materials).

Welcome to the forum. I also agree it looks like serpentine. But tests can help such as hardness, streak test, reactive to acids, etc. General location can also help as certain minerals are abundant in certain locations.

Thanks for the welcome and the direction to go. I am determining serpentine by these arguments: - Will scratch with fingernail slightly and penny easily - Streak is white - Conchoidal fracturing - Waxy lustre - Color and translucency consistent with serpentine descriptions - Found in Arizona near Globe
Would you call this a specimen or something better trimmed and tumbled?

It does look like the nice gemmy serpentine from the globe area, lots of nice serpentine in the creeks from Globe to Young. If you got a 4x4 or quad, head up to the asbestos mines near the lake, there is a cool lime green serpentine in the mine tailings.

Serpentine is soft and waxy so I would say it is serpentine.
