Think Big as in Big Brutus. DSC00875 by ngboettch, on Flickr Second largest electric shovel, could move 150 tons of coal in one scoop.

Does Kansas have a lot of coal? That's a big shovel!

It does. The coal was bituminous. It also has most of the zinc production in the US though I believe that has not been mined in almost 50 years. Surprises abound. Having no great agate or jasper areas is a bit of a let down though. I know they still mine gypsum and salt, not sure of much of anything else.

Has anyone sampled the flint hills for "flint"? The flint usually found there is grey. It is easy to find though.

Come up to the glaciated region in the NE. It's not native, but it's here (agates and jaspers - and anything else the ice could walk off with). I had to get used to the smaller pieces for the most part, but the variety makes up for it. The coal was a bit further south. The best thing to come out of the pits nowadays is big bass!

Maybe you would show me a spot or 2 that has some. Might find something to tumble at least.
