All of my international shipments have gone to Norway. Customs there requires that recipient pays a 25% tax on the value of International shipments. I insure everything and make sure the customer is aware of the tax. So, after paying me, say, $100.00 for a parcel, they must pay customs another $25.00 to pick it up. Everything shipped has arrived in excellent condition. Recipients said there were even no signs of the packages being opened for inspection, something they expected to happen.

I think PayPal requires insurance on all orders but I send by priority mail international on most international orders. It has tracking/insurance included. For low priced orders (under $100 I give customer a choice when possible for 1st class but tell them there is no tracking, no insurance and I would not be responsible if order was lost or damaged. This communication is by email so I have their agreement in writing if needed later. So far nothing lost. A few cases of Customs delays and one really bad experience with FedEx in Australia when I sent a package by Priority Mail and USPS sent through FedEx because box was over USPS limit. It was a "Diamond Ring Saw" by Gryphon. FedEx like UPS brokers the import fees with broker fees added but held order saying the reported sale price was too low if it was anything made of diamonds. I sent copies of the invoice, credit card slip, customs forms and emailed back and forth and talked many times on phone to them. Finally customer had to wait for his credit card statement to verify his charge. I no longer ship any diamond anything overseas. I ship Rock cutting blades, rock grinding wheels, rock cutting machines, etc.

That business about Australian Customs and diamond equipment is funny johnjsgems . Over the past 14 years I've shipped many expensive gemstones internationally and I learned quickly that Customs can be a major problem in several ways. First, it's risking fate to have a customs label on the outside of a parcel identifying the contents as "sapphire," "amethyst," or any other common gem name. My solution: I use the technical name, i.e., "blue corundum," "purple quartz," etc., as the situation demands. It's perfectly honest, eliminates most potential for pilfering and avoids misunderstandings like yours by customs officials. I've used Priority International for the bulk of my shipments, dating back to when an international SFRB cost only $11.95. The only problems I've had were shipments to New Jersey, U.S.A. On two occasions I've had NJ shipments lost for several weeks, only to have them "miraculously" turn up, no explanation given. So far I've never lost a parcel entirely but I'm choosy about destinations I won't ship to. I'm thinking of including New Jersey on that list...

My wife can't hardly send anything to Miami. Sometimes priority mail takes 2-3 weeks and several small packages never arrived at all. It could be because she has me print the labels so ship from says "JS GEMS". Guessing like your precious gems it is just too tempting to someone. I did have one dispute on an order to NC. They filed a dispute saying they never ordered anything. It was a couple of slab saw blades to a commercial customer (who has since bought a lot of blades). Because of the dispute the funds were held by PayPal for a couple of months. I had to send invoices, PP funds received receipt, documentation of shipping from MK with their employee's name that signed for it. Finally got my money but it was no fun. The next year the same company ordered more blades. I looked up the company online and sent an email to "customer support@..." explaining the dispute for same order the previous year and unless I received some kind of verification order was for real I would cancel order and refund which I did 2 weeks later after hearing nothing. 5 minutes later the guy called in a panic wondering why his order was cancelled? I explained, he didn't know anything about the dispute but he did place another order and all was well. Some kind of industrial supplier that resells the blades to one customer. Since then they are one of my best blade customers. They order 1 or 2 14" and 1 or 2 18" blades every 2-3 months.

The client, she, sent another message a few days ago, but I have ignored it. All she did was complain that I refunded half her money when she didn't ask me to do it. OK, fair enough, I did. But, in all honesty, I don't feel that I am responsible, but in an effort to make nice, I refunded half her purchase. I guess that just makes me stupid. I am waiting for her to escalate the claim. I will fight it. I will lose, but I will fight it. PP already has my money. It's not about the money. The whole thing just pisses me off. I am not responsible for a PO screw up. I did my part and mailed the package. I don't know if it's a cultural thing or what, but she seems to be deliberately rubbing me wrong. I'm actually a little surprised that she has not escalated, yet.

I was on the other side of a similar situation. Bought a used book from a US-based 3rd party seller on Amazon. When it didn't arrive after a month, I contacted the seller who immediately credited my PP account. Then... About 8 months later, the book arrived...from ENGLAND!!!!!
