Anybody have any ideas as to what this is? Dark rich black, with brown and red banding. Probably an 8 on mohs. This has been formed a bit on a grinder, and with 'wet-dry' sand paper. One shot with light table on, one shot with flash. Any ideas would be appreciated. -Banjo

i don't know what it is but i have a few small pieces that my friend from idaho brought me on his last trip here. i have a couple in the tumbler now and it seems like i was losing a lot of the black as it tumbles. i would like to know what it is.

I might agree with the pertified wood, except the grain is way to erratic. It has no real pattern for any length of the stone. It takes a closer look to see that there is no direction that is consistant. I probably should have taken a close up. I'm hoping the guy will show me where he got it in the next couple of weeks or so. I like it too John. This stuff does not break along any grain easily and no one layer seems to be harder or softer than the other.

In my inexperience, the first thing I noticed was a wavey pattern on the bottom of the stone to the right, like some kind of lace agate cookie

it's a piece of petrified fire wood. a dinosaur stomped the fire out before it actually burned the wood. ;D

It sort of looks like 'Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper' without the yellow circular patterns. Any thing got a name of a stone like that?

To any one interested: That stone in the photo is Black and White Banded Onyx. Found it in my 'Minerals of Arizona' Book. Thank you!
