Hi all , I went to my first meeting at the Invercargill rock club , was invited to take a raffle ticket and decided on 2..numbers 13 and 14 for 1 NZ dollar. No I did not want to be greedy by taking 2 I WON a bag of rocks and here are some of the pics . To me they are a real treasure. The biggest rock is not won , but belongs to another member and he asked me to cut it with my 24" saw. It is a nice piece of petrified wood and I will post the results when they come to hand. Enjoy Jack Jaqk

That's a good lookin' bunch of rocks! Don'tcha just love it when you find a real bargain!
BE and I went to the rock show in San Antonio a few months ago and bought some stuff in the auction. We got some really neat rocks for next to nothing! I just love it when that happens!
Wish we could find a 24" saw for a bargain! ;D

Hi all , thanks for your replies to my lucky raffle. Some of the pieces are named and some are numbered. The only one I know for sure is from the USA is the plume agate. Today I had to get medicine from my doctor to control the shingles which is killing me But I shall survive. Before going to the doc I went with my wife to an old clubmember and he has sooooooooooooo many rocks, I could have spent 2 weeks there and still not see them all. WOW that was so beautiful , I will go back there for more. He used to have busloads of americans he said and they exchanged rocks. His name is Charlie Powell and a great rockhound. Even gave me some nice pieces to play with and I could have had more. He also has some old steel barrels for sale which I am tempted to buy, but I will see what I will do. Thanks again for your interest, much appreciated Jack

Hello,
Boy, I'll tell you what ... for a dollar ... you done alright!
The Plume Agate that you have photographed looks like Graveyard Point Plume Agate. This particular plume agate has gorgeous plumes and it polishes beautifully. Check the slab over real good and look for pyrite that has been trapped in the agate. When it is cut and polished, it has a gorgeous gold color. Pyrite is knows as fools gold (here in the U.S.A.). If you do find some and get it cut and polished, use a magnifying glass and check out the crystalline struture, it will be cubic in nature (90 degree crystal structure).
Again, Congratulations! I wish I was that lucky.
Enjoy,
John

My latest batch of rocks out of polish , I am not too happy yet so will give them a soapwash for 4 day. they are Hydrogrossular garnets on top and there are mudstones and quartz and fossilised wormcasts in the collander too. Hi all , thanks again for the many replies. Yes we do have pyrite in NZ and I have found my share of it, and we too call it fools gold . I have cut a rock which has a fair bit in it , but it is not easy to polish I found. I will have to invest in a magifier to see the chrystals. Jack
