Hi All!
I am hoping someone here can connect me to someone in the NorCal area that has a lapidary saw and would be willing to assist me in cutting a large geode. I am perfectly willing to pay, I just have absolutely no access to a saw and I have no friends (yet) that are into this hobby.
Thanks in advance!

If you don't have any luck locally let me know. If it can be shipped here I can take it to the gem club and have it cut on the geode saw for you.

Makes a BIG difference on what kind of saw would be required.

There is a great club right in your area called the Roseville Rock Rollers that has a lapidary workshop. Maybe take it by and show it to them - chances are very high that they can help you - or join the club and learn how to cut it yourself The annual gem show and sale put on by the Roseville club is one of the great ones and I never miss it. If you need a little more instant gratification there's a good rock shop a little less than an hour from you in Vacaville - Consolidated Rocks and Minerals and they have a saw in the back that would cut it IF the rock is shaped in a way that it can be clamped in the vice of the saw. They used to charge $5 per cut which sounds like it would be worth it just to see what's inside? This last suggestion comes with a warning though - cutting your 'rattler' in a large oil-cooled saw will fill the cavity with dirty mucky oil and may or may not ruin the experience for you. Whatever is rattling inside could fall in the muck never to be seen again. Which ever way you go let be sure to post inside pictures - I'm curious as heck about your 'rattler.'

I am cracking up right now for two reasons. Firstly because I have already discovered the Roseville Rock Rollers and am planning on going to their next meeting on Tuesday night, and Secondly because Consolidated Rock and Mineral is where I bought the geode! I asked if they had a saw that could cut it and the lady said that they don't. So I don't know if it's the case that the geode just isn't shaped in a way that is conducive to being cut with their saw, or maybe she just didn't feel like cutting it lol. But I will take it with me to the meeting on Tuesday. I eventually want to own a lapidary saw and a sphere machine, but that is probably years down the road and I don't want to wait that long to see what's inside! LOL. "Rattle" is probably a strong word for the noise it makes. It is more like a quiet jingle. Like some druzy came lose and is jingling around in there. I am super excited to see what it looks like in there!!

If the older lady was working then her husband Greg the shop owner was running around somewhere and he's a really nice guy and the one who used to cut a few things for me before I got my big saw. If it was a youngish girl then she was working with the other guy Dennis and he is a pretty uncooperative fellow (dare I say an a-hole?) and I pretty much avoid the shop on the days he works Or... maybe their saw is broken - certainly a problem that I can relate to - mine is generally broke more than it's fixed Enjoy the RR meeting - that's awesome haha.

It was a young lady with blue hair. Come to think of it, she and Dennis are the only ones I have ever seen in there lol. I just must be unlucky in the days that I pick to go. But I do absolutely adore that shop!!! I wish they were willing to trade/barter! I have a massive collection for trading, but can't afford half the things in there that I "need" LOL! And I am super excited about the meeting too. It will be great to meet people in my area with similar interests.

Yeah, that does explain it - the owner Greg and his wife are really sweet people but they are getting older and working less and less. I think they might be down to one or two days a week. Every time I go in Greg is eager to show me some new stuff he has brought in - and he's happy to let me crawl around in the "way back" area of the building and I typically unearth some cob-web covered treasure that hasn't seen the light of day in years. Dennis not so much - he want's nothing to do with anything resembling building customer relationships and has come across as downright snotty to me on a couple of occasions when I've asked for a modest discount or volume purchase etc. I always call ahead and if it's not a Greg day I don't go. Enjoy the meeting! you might end up being the youngest one in the room but don't let that stop you. So many of these clubs are in desperate need of new (younger) members with energy and exuberance to share.

I have never asked for a discount, but I definitely caught some attitude for having him open a few of the cases so I could more closely inspect a few spheres before purchasing. He also laughed in my face when I inquired about the owner's potential willingness to trade or purchase specimens. Not every shop is willing to do that, but I have found that most are, and I have never had anyone laugh in my face before about it LOL. Oh well, that just means I gotta save up a little longer before going back haha. Next time I want to go I will definitely call ahead to see if Greg is in! He sounds like a great character. And, yeah, I expected nothing else with regards to the potential age gap in the club Not a lot of people in my age group get this excited about rocks My poor BF gets to listen to me rave on a daily basis about this or that specimen that I found on ebay or in a shop. Just you watch, I'll convert him!!! As of now I am just trying to ignore my tumbler and resist the urge to peek every day. I have promised myself I won't open them again until this Saturday, and by golly this time I mean it!
