I found a pile (5-10 lbs estimated) of somebody's abandoned tumbling project on the side of a road while I was biking. I picked them up because they looked like they would take a shine and they don't look like anything I find around here. I broke them all up except for the 2 on the bottom before I thought to ID them...the 3 pieces on the top are typical of what I busted up. Anybody know what they are? chert/flint/ agate??

You are in Alberta. If you were in New Mexico, I'd say you found a bunch of iron rich jasper. If they were white on the inside and only red on the outside, I'd say you were confusing the jasper with pieces of quartz that had iron oxidized on the outside. Happy tumbling. At the worst you will end up with red or white rocks that shine.

I find some of my best stuff this way! While I am no expert on them, these look to be gastroliths. Essentially they are chert and will take a nice polish.

braat If you note the top freshly fractured rock it appears to have a somewhat waxy luster. That says to me agate. There is similar agate sparsely distributed in some north GA limestone. If this is found (originally) in Limestone it is probably a sedimentary agate and it may have some chert or jasper mixed in but generally the more waxy the more I lean to agate. It looks like it has been hit hard at some time in the past (lower stones) and has some serious fractures. Not uncommon in sedimentary agates or cherts. If from Alberta you can get fracturing from temperature change as well.

I was thinking gastroliths too. Which are cool. Possibly deposited by a pleisiosaur. Who knows.
