I want to judge the interest that might be there on an semi-organized RTH meetup at Clear Creek to collect Plasma agate in the creek and at the mine, along with the possibility of jadeite and agate nodules in the creek. Group camping is on a first-come basis at a nice (dry) campground just outside the entrance. Hotel accommodations are available within one hour in several directions including Coalinga or King City. It would have to be in May - the earlier the better or it's going to be too hot there by June. Saturdays in May - 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th Getting permits in advance is required! One permit per person per day plus a vehicle permit. Each person is limited to five days in the ACEC per year. State what day you CAN go and tag someone you think lives in driving distance and might have an interest in going... drocknutMsAliaDave jeannieNRGzarguy AzRockGeekrockpickerforever Bluesky78987<'))))>< Fish

Possible side trips: Area 54 for jasper and Blue G. Recommended 4x4 or AT tires minimum if you take the beautiful and scenic (and shortest) route over the ridge as shown. The Pinnacles National Monument for a bad ass hiking and caves adventure.

Just for clarification regarding permits. The campground is located OUTSIDE of the ACEC and thus the permits are only required for the days in which you plan to open the gate and travel into the ACEC. In other words if someone planned on arriving at the campground on Friday afternoon or evening you probably don't want to waste your money on a permit for Friday. There are areas of the creek that can be walked extensively without venturing into the ACEC. And yes, the rangers DO actively check for permits. We've been checked.

What with a trip next weekend with an out of town friend, we wouldn't be able to so quickly do another in may.

Tommy, I'm potentially in. Just a few questions, as the creek hunting intrigues me. Based upon your experience, how deep is the creek there and how fast does the water move? I only ask as Jugglerguy has come up with a means to search his lakes (transparent cargo container), and I'm wondering if that sort of device might be helpful here. Even if Rob's device won't work, that's not a deal breaker for me. What sort of boots/waders would we need for the creek. I'll have to see what we have going on through May.

Hi Dave - every time I've been there it's been not much more than a gentle stream - minor waterfalls in places where the water goes over rocks. Probably never more than 12" deep in any one spot. Here are some pictures from our 2014 trip.

Thanks for tagging me Tommy but I probably won't be able to make it in May. It would be a badass trip though so whoever makes it will have a great trip. Don't forget there is also chrome diopside in the creek. That campground is pretty nice, I camped there in my travel trailer a year ago when I went with Kris. Dave, the creek is deep in some places but very shallow in others and it really depends on how much rain they have had in the area. This was from when I went in April, 2017 It was drizzling on us that day but not terrible. the creek area near the campground

Nice to know. Diane drocknut, I also appreciate the input, as it only confirms what Tommy related. I'm looking to see if I can clear my schedule. As of now, I think all Saturdays in May are open. I probably wouldn't be a camper...I'd just look to see if I would beeline from home on the Saturday or spend the Friday in a hotel somewhere. Still early, but this is clearly on my radar.

Bill, what do you consider May to be? I'm thinking it is spring, at least in the Northern hemisphere. But I could be wrong...
