Want to say hi to everyone. Just started rock polishing I have some Boley Agate to play with and a thumblers UV 18. Is there anyone who lives in the Muskogee Oklahoma area like to see in person how it’s done?

Welcome from Michigan. You don’t really need anyone in person to show you how it’s done, you can learn everything here, at least that’s how I did It.

Welcome gilbert from Northern California! That UV-18 is one sweet vib tumbler! You should be able to put a nice shine on those Agates. If you run into trouble, let us know so we can talk it over and see if the difficulties can be overcome. There are a lot of good people and knowledge floating around the Forum.

Welcome to the forum from North Carolina. You can find the answers to pretty much all your tumbling questions on here. There are some very talented individuals that post on here, and they are incredibly helpful. One note: you will probably want to get some sort of rotary tumbler to do your first stage grind. Vibe tumblers are great for stages two on up, but not so much for the initial shaping.

However... From what I have been told the life expectancy of the vibratory bowl suffers because of the sharp edges wearing down the insides. I noticed this happening when I first started and followed advice to coat the inside of the bowl with super glue. That smoothed out the inside scratches, but after repeated uses the glue shredded away. I since replaced the bowl. I now use a rotary tumbler to knock down the sharp edges before shifting to 220 grit in my UV-18. Good learning experience. Glenn

My reasoning was just as Glenn said. The coarse grit eats up bowls, and the vibe doesn't really shape the rocks, which isn't a bad thing if that is what you're after. Folks do them both ways, and neither is wrong, just depends on what you're shooting for.
