I recently got into my buckets of fluorite that I collected before winter. I just did some test cuts to see what I had. I will be trying to cab this as time allows and to test the viability of this material. Cool stuff, but not sure if I 'love' it... Would you like to work with this material? Brec. Wow!!! That's really pretty stuff. Let us know how it works up. I'd give it a shot. It seems it might be crumbly to slab, but I'm sure you could get some cabs out of it.

Soooo, I have done a cab of some this fluorite. I have been pretty busy and have only gotten the one done, I will try some of the others asap, but I may not be able to post a pic for a while. I have been in talks with myself for many days on whether or not I should post a pic of this lumpy thing. If I could personify the piece it would definitely swing on ropes from bell towers and fall in love with Esmeralda. Herein lies my problem: I decided to cab one of the pieces that had pink feldspar in it (pic 7, second to last). I was correct that the country rock was incorporated in this outcrop of fluorite. What my brain did not realize was the fact that if I had feldspar from the country granite I would likely have quartz as well. I had quartz. So, the piece has hardnesses of 3, 6, & 7 . My amateur skills were not prepared for this. The cab is lumpy, especially where there is quartz. Then, to top off the problems, some of the feldspar had altered to clay and will not take a polish. Without further ado and with much hesitation here is my first cab of this fluorite. I had done an egg shape in hopes I could use this for the April FCC. 20180427_160458 by Thomas Strong, on Flickr NDK I could be persuaded to let some of this go Send me a PM if interested (anyone) and I can do some quick cuts to determine fill pattern and post pics, or if you want the surprise yourself I can send chunks.

That doesn't look so bad. Some stones undercut- that's just the way they are. Try not to use much pressure on the softer wheels. I bet you pull some off much nicer in the future- now that you know what you are working with.

Thank you rockjunquie, I will try to use less pressure on the soft wheels and I appreciate the advice

That looks pretty good considering all the different harness levels.
