This seems complicated but is not so if near final shaping is done on the wheel prior to tumbling. Having processed all kinds of glass you learn what type of glass will work for cab tumbling. Becomes second nature. Thought it might be interesting to you rock grinders out there. This is a heated shard from a blown glass lamp shade and had a severe curve in shape. It was cut close to final size with nippers to get a dome with constant girdle after melted flat. Both melted flat and dome created in one cook. The edges were minimally shaped on a 60 grit flat lap. Note white color. ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/980/39965851750_4dcc7e7c3e_z.jpg) Note that green/blue/yellow color layer is about dead center less the white which is clad to the back offering depth: ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/953/27904644658_74e3b0749c_z.jpg) ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/906/40874209395_c743d3cf0f_z.jpg) Refraction of domed clear glass on front pulls color to surface when viewed at angle creating an appealing moving image of color layer: ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/832/27904641148_6d4df07a60_z.jpg) Back is clad in white creating a problem if over tumbled as it could be tumbled away damaging appeal, so final shape must be close to reduce tumble shaping to minimal shaping. Note chipping from 60 grit wheel. Tumbler will make small work of them. ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/911/41055801414_eef78054eb_z.jpg) However glass comes in many forms and they must be tumbled accordingly so as not to wear clad colors. A mix of variations, some from vases and some home brewed laminations. Some have color from top to bottom and can be heavily tumbled. Attempt is made to grind sillhoute along equal girdle height which does effect final shape: ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/947/41773092051_f815ffc297_c.jpg) ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/864/41054766444_b75e0f2b6e_c.jpg)

Would coating the back (white) coating in epoxy before tumbling reduce the grind there and allow you more leeway in that step? ... or would that create an unwanted cleanup step or problems down the road? The sticker you use might hide any partial patches.
