This is set on public so you should be able to see what it looks like at $5.99/month. Two galleries, one with a few photos and the other( a 5000 blob transfer) named Jim Price with 5000 photos. Starting to transfer from flickr to Smugmug. Only 5000 per gallery(album). I will transfer my whole 18,600 flickr photos into 4 galleries(5000/gallery max.) as a start. Then transfer flickr albums one by one. photos transferred 1 per second, so 5000 seconds for 5000 photos(close to 1 second/photo). 3600 seconds/hour. Went smooth. Not sure what order they are in and don't really care for the initial 18,600 transfer. Start/stop point may be a mystery. may have to organize flickr by say old to new and then make another 18,600 photo transfer. Thinking about that.... jim-price.smugmug.com |

James, I'm surprised no one has answered. Maybe we are all dazzled by 5000 photos in one transfer. With PhotoBucket its hard to get one download per 10 visits.
I'm sure you are aware, but there is a setting that will let the public view but not download without your permission. I was curious and tried a download (a giant dog gliding over a hurdle in a show), and it worked. so its likely that the way you have your 5000 setup, they could all be downloaded by someone. Just thought I'd remind you. Let me know what I owe you for the download, or if I should send it back to you. Cheers for being brave.

Emailed Smugmug. asked what their intentions are with the flickr configuration. Good news - flickr will remain the same flickr set up except the accounting(and probable Smugmug charges). So your flickr photos should stay in flickr 'albums' and not Smugmug 'galleries'. unless you move photos from one to the other. So, to answer your question NRG I would say the URL's will remain the same flickr url's. I did create fire pit albums in flickr and in iPhoto. Fire pits are my livelihood so I want their photos safe. So I also created them in Smugmug by loading them from iPhoto to Smugmug galleries. I think it is a good idea to have your product photos listed in Etsy/flickr/Pintrest/Smugmug and anywhere else on the internet for exposure...... if you put relevant tags attached to the photos to assist in searches(for SEO). Check it out - Smugmug fire pit galleries. It was easy to do. User friendly and seamless. I like it. jim-price.smugmug.comAnd this should be comforting to those that have flickr accounts:  So, I will use flickr mostly for personal photos to some degree. Probably do the business stuff (glass and fire pits) in Smugmug to simplify life. And do mass(flickr photo stream) transfers to serve as photo back up to Smugmug. Chunk them in 5000 photo (the limit) blobs in Smugmug galleries. |

Yes, aware of these settings, and not concerned about public views. the limit of 5000 is Smugmug's limit of photos in one album. If you have more than 5000 you can load them in another album. Not a bad way to store photos if you have a bunch. I went ahead and started paying Smumug monthly figuring they were going to charge those monthly fees to those that have free flickr accounts. |

But are you distinguishing between views and downloads. Download could result in unauthorized sale or use if you have some unique material.

So far I have experienced no devious behavior knock on wood. I will say that the biggest problem I have had in past years is copy cats undercutting prices. The only way I have found to solve this problem with fire pits is to have exclusive contract on expensive to fabricate items. And stock piling mass quantities of the steel parts when steel was low in cost. The exclusive and the mass stocking a commodity when low in price seems to have tripped the copy cats up good. Steel is ramping up in price now. Hope it returns to 2008 ceiling prices. But you never know when the next competitive attack may happen. |
