Recently we went to a creek and got a lot of garnet, and what I was wondering was what is the best way to remove the outer casing the hard outer casing that surround the garnet? We've heard that oxalate acid is the best to use but we don't know if there's a substitute?

Welcome to the forum.
Do you know what the host rock is? I have found garnet in a variety of host rocks. Schist, amphibiole minerals, quartz, ecoglite, etc. What would dissolve the host rock would depend on what the host rock is.

well......, i have no earthly idea, lol. it came out of a creek here in Alabama, but, the lady at the local store said oxalate acid, so, sounds like i better trust her word, lol. we are very new to this, and prob will be asking a lot of dumb questions, like the one i just asked. not saying you made me feel dumb, just that when i read your reply, i was like......, duh....., how dumb am i? i didn't even consider it was a rock....., and i dunno why not, lol. but there is some of it in these formations that look like miniature silver pancakes....., its like hardened silt or something. i can break it, but, it doesn't dissolve in water...., obviously since it came out of a creek...., lol, i am dumb. anyway, thanks for the reply, that's awesome! and believe it or not, it helps a bunch, cuz at least i am thinking of it better now. have a good one!
