Sometime within a 3 hour span last Saturday, someone hacked into my eBay account and changed the password and the linked email account. Whoever it was didn't buy anything, he just made it impossible for me to log in until I called eBay and got things fixed.
No idea how he got my info. I never open email from unknown sources or click on any links I'm not absolutely certain of.

Glad they were able to get it corrected. Make sure you change passwords every 30 days. Sometimes they hack it to get bank info. So make sure you call them as well and report a breach. Oh and paypal also

That's strange. You didn't, by chance, get "phished," did you? Any purported emails from Ebay where you were asked to sign into your account? Glad you were able to work things out. And, I learned something. I never knew Ebay had phone support.

Sometimes people hack accounts just because they can. I have a facebook account that is rarely used. I set it up to enter a contest and there is only skeletal information. There were a lot of friends requests sent out and some accepted so I had a mess to clean up. They also changed the language to Mandarin. Google translate was able to help me reset the language. Facebook was no help and they could give a spit about members account security.
Recently, I clicked on an Ebay link and got infected with a browser hijacker. I was able to remove it. The link showed up again and I took a screen print and was able to talk to someone on the phone and eventually email the screen print. Ebay sells ads that are embedded in their screens and this ad had a link to malware.

But...since I couldn't log in, that was the only way I get it resolved.

I had a case where we were pretty sure it was a buyer that hacked my account through corresponding via EBay's messaging center.

Sometimes people hack accounts just because they can. That seems to have been the case with "Nathan something=or-other" hijacking my account. I'm lucky that's all it was, because I have had the automatic PayPal thing set up. Would have taken even more phone calls to straighten things out if the turd bird had bought anything.

Thought I'd throw it out there anyway, as this thread could be a good reminder for folks to be cautious about what they do online. Besides, you made me go check my eBay account and change my PW, even though I'm using a PW generator (Last Pass).

The bad thing is, many Companies get information from customers, than they make a huge list, than sell the names to other Companies, thus someone gets this info and cause havoc hell....

Great article, thanks. When I was working, I think I was on about a dozen different systems where PWs needed to be changed often. It was a MAJOR pain. But, I can see the things that I did with newer PWs that were discussed in that article.
Now, not working, but I'm using a PW generator and storage that makes things pretty painless.

I received an alert last week from Credit Karma that one of my accounts was compromised. Turns out it was due to the Blue Cross Data Breach in 2013 for my email account. They suggested changing the password. Since 2013 I have changed that password at least 12 times. Blue Cross (my health care provider through work) was never given access to my email password anyways. Yes, I do receive tons of junk mail daily, probably 50 or more. Just keep reporting them as spam. I had my EBAY Account hacked into in 2000. One purchase made using my name. I changed password, with help from EBAY Cust. Service. Person who made purchase with my account never paid and supposedly left negative review of the seller. My account was blocked by EBAY. I have never signed up for an account since then. I can live without EBAY.

Maybe things have changed since 2000, fernwood . When I talked to eBay's CS and Security person, I got the impression that they would have rescinded any transactions that I hadn't made.

Now someone tried to highjack my Amazon account! Just got an email asking if I was changing my password. That sucks. But, that also tells me they may have already gotten into your account. I think PW changes are only seen as an option when one is actually signed in. You may want to do a new password there, just in case.
