Wow! Jim, I don't recall it being mentioned that each piece was carved from one stone. No glue. Do you think they were each carved from one piece? Impressive! Thanks.

The carriage No5 is actually in the Chinese museum in my home town here in Australia. It is a full size carriage from Jade.
When the Museum acquired the carriage it had been in storage for a very long time and there were some breakages. They invited several members of my Gem Club to inspect it and see what we could recommend. While it would have been a wonderful challenge we had to recommend getting a professional conservator in, the age and value of the item was way beyond what we amateurs wanted to be responsible for.
It was a fantastic opportunity for us to get up close and personal with an artifact that is truly amzing, we were also given a private tour of the collection and while the carriage is amazing there are other pieces that are even better.
It is not one piece of stone but lots of very large panels glued onto a wooden frame, the age of the glue and movement are what caused most of the damage.
I have a feeling that the big block of Jade is also in my area, if its the same one it was carved into a big Buddha and is now installed in the Buddhist Stupa here.
I just checked the local newspaper, it is the same block of Jade from BC. The Jade buddha has been doing a world tour but is here now and will be installed in the stupa tomorrow.

Thank you for the input pauls. You got a very lucky break. I spent ten months in China and saw some incredible carvings including a large ship (+ - 6 feet long) and these still left me speechless. Needless to say my carving learning curve got extended by miles there instead of shortening. Jim

That Jade Buddha is a truly stunning piece of Jade. It was all over the TV news last night being hoisted into place with a crane and in position, it really is gem quality Jade, emerald green and it it glows. The raw block cost $1.5 million and they recouped a lot of that by carving the offcuts and flogging them off.
