Hey! Comments in the "what's in your batch?" thread have got me excited. It would be lots of fun to meet some of y'all if you'd like to come stumble around in the desert. A group for a weekend or a few days, or individuals at different times, its all good.
There are lots of known sites here. Random stumbling even yields at least some results nearly every time. Well known rocks include a literal mountain of wonderstone, and of course Ramsey agate, many, many jasper deposits (most of it unspectacular but an occasional thrill is found. If I can find it again I know of at least one untapped vein that might yield amazement with tools and strong backs), both seam and nodule agate and chalcedony, petrified wood, and many sites I haven't yet checked out.
Many sites are accessible via passenger car if you're careful, sane and observant. 4x4 gets a lot more access of course. (I don't have a truck yet but definitely wanting to get one.)
Mcdermitt is also only 3 hours away, and there are VERY extensive and rich sites there. I haven't explored a lot though.
If anyone is interested, let's set up a target date or dates. My summer is pretty open.
If desired I can help with gathering info on lodging, be it motels or rv-style campgrounds. And of course there is a lot of open territory around town, so finding a spot to park a camper, trailer,or small rv in the desert is easy.
Let me know what you think, either here or via pm!

We had a great time years ago on a club trip to Fallon. We collected the Wonderstone from the claim the old rock shop owner had East of town. Out that way is a very interesting Petroglyph area and an ancient Indian site. You can walk around what is left of the cliffside homes and there is a very old food storage cave that is only accessed through guided tours by the museum in Fallon. They happened to have a school group there the day we were there and when the kids finished the guide said she had probably enough gas in the generator if we wanted a free tour. Great timing and very interesting. The cave was sacred and only women were allowed inside. Old reed mats covered storage holes in the ground. To prevent rodents from eating their seeds and grain, the women swallowed the seeds and grain whole then collected their feces. The feces was stored for later in the holes. Yum, yum, make you hungry for a big bowl of granola?

I come through Fallon on my way to Reno and back. My aunt and uncle lived there for a long time on Sheckler Road so we used to visit there a lot and would occasionally go scuba diving in Big Soda Lake to see the equipment from the old soda factory. Never spent any time looking for rocks around there though. Have found some nice stuff though at the nearby Lahontan area.
