Chert has a bad rap for some. I prefer the term Chalcedony which includes Agates and Jaspers. Very generic, but allows for anyone calling one on the carpet for misrepresenting something.

Why would it have a bad rap? Ive always grown up knowing it as that.

All about regional differences. In some areas chert is a throw away. Not worth picking up. Yes, it can have beautiful patterns and be very lapidary quality. All depends on others perception of the material. What is locally for me called Wisconsin Jasper, is considered "chert junk" by some on RTH. I have been repeatedly accused of misrepresentation by some here and do not want you to go through that. Enough said.

Thank you for looking out for me. A few years ago, I got really curious about what is in my home state. All I knew for sure was the lakers and chert, so I wanted to know what I was picking up. Who knew those pretty pink rocks I picked up had a name? ; ) I've read a lot and am getting pretty familiar with what is in the area. Some of this is way over my head, but I still read it. I don't label anything I am not sure of-hence why I ask dumb questions sometimes. Sometimes, the ID I get is wrong and my instinct was right. Chert is Chert and has been used throughout history, especially by native Americans. I have always been drawn to it as it is all over MN and I find some of the colors/patterns really dam cool. So I really don't care what others think of it. It calls to me and that all that I really care about. conservancy.umn.edu/handle/11299/101466

MN and WI are a lot alike, rock wise, especially my old home in NW WI. Each state has some unique rocks as well. Whatever appeals to the person finding it.

I just finished a Mozarkite. I looked it up to see what it was. It was extremely hard and fine grained and could easily have passed for Willow Creek. To my surprise it is a chert. A pretty rock is a pretty rock.

A pretty rock is a pretty rock. I got a couple chunks of that. When I saw it, I thought it looks like chert Did the same thing and looked it up and yep it is Chert.
A pretty rock is a pretty rock -some just get fancier names
