Hi All, Hope you had a great weekend! Just wanted to show you a little of the hematite I picked up today. Got some pretty nice bigger pieces too and found out just how red your hands can get when your messing with this stuff. ;D Spent about 2 hours out today and about 3 hours washing the stuff we gathered. Mostly hematite and jasper and a little quartz. A few interesting pieces that I think would look really nice slabbed. Will add more pics in a while. Cher

Here's a couple more pics. Front / Back of this piece. And this nice chunk of quartz. Not even sure why I took it except it's cool. Definitely a candidate for a saw, not a tumbler. LOL Any suggestions on polishing the hematite? I thought there was a post recently about it. I did a search but didn't find anything about polishing it. Cher

That's pretty wild, I've never known anyone to find chunks of hematite before. Keep finding stuff like this, and you are going to be needing a lot more and bigger tumblers!

I can drive about 15 miles from my home and pick up all I want of this stuff ... it grows wild here. ;D
That's why I was asking about tumbling it, seems I remember a post that was talking about how getting red hands from it or something like that. Maybe I'm thinking of something else though.

Hi Cher,
I currently have hematite in the first stage (2nd week). Definitely do it alone, it will stain everything red. It is shaping up very nicely though. I was told to use the 60/90, 120/220, 500, 1000, cerium oxide. I'll post pics when they're done.
Hope this helps,
Scott

Hello Cher, You lucky duck! I would have to drive at least a good 3 hours to find a half-way suitable collecting area. If you have never worked with Hematite before ... you'll love it It is one of the messiest stones that I have ever cut and polished . Be sure to wear an apron or some old clothes that you don't mind ruining or throwing away! Tumbling is much cleaner than cutting and working the stone by hand ... but you are still going to get dirty ;D I generally use rubber gloves when working with this material, as it save a hundred questions from your friends, family and employees. I did use it once to get out of work for about an hour. I went into work and my boss seen my hands and asked if everything was alright. I told her that I was having an alergic reaction to some oil and she sent me home ;D. I was gone for about an hour (we were very slow anyway) and when I came back I had breakfast for everyone, to smooth my return and tell her the real truth ;D ;D ;D. For some reason I had to work late that day? As for the apron, I wear one that resembles a dress ... well okay it's an old dress that my wife was going to throw away. Well actually I took it and she doesn't know it's missing. Scary huh? Enjoy, John

OMG ... I can see it now ... I don't know if I want to mess with it, maybe when I'm bored silly in the middle of the winter and have tumbled everything I could get my hands on. LOL I looked at the mindat page and it says that this stuff has a hardness of 5-6. I think I have enough small stuff to do a batch and they are all really smooth already. Do you think I could skip the first step and start with 120/200 or should I still run it in the 60/90 first? Cher

Cher,
Since your looking to sell some of your finds, you might consider posting on the buy, sell and swap board of this site. That way it's easy for everyone to find, and you don't have to worry about this post getting buried. You can also list price and pics and any particulars there as well.
