I had just finished running a barrel in Medium, 120/220 grit. Had to determine what to use next. Had a Thumblers Tumbler package labeled fine, but did not give a size. Had a tin can labeled fine/pre-polish 400/600
The Thumblers Tumbler package labeled as fine appeared to be half way between the 120/220 and the 400/600. It was the same color as the 120/200, but finer grains. Not a powder like the pre-polish. I mixed half and half. Going to let that run for a week and check.
Any idea what size the fine grit might have been? All of these are 1980’s grits. Thanks.

120/220 and straight 220 should be discernible from any 400 to 600 easily fernwood. 220 has been a common abrasive for 30 years. Pretty sure the in-between grit is straight 220. 120/220 or 220 and then to 400/600 should be fine either way. You can run the 120/220 or the 220 for an extra week and in most cases it should be closer to 1000. So if not sure just spin them a bit longer to make sure break down has happened. I used to do sic 30 sic 220 AO 500 then AO polish. Some do a 1000 step to catch the long hop from 500 to polish. I just ran the AO 500 12 to 14 days, rocks were getting a shine, all's good and ready for polish.
