hello all...sunday morning I drove up north to backbone state park in iowa...its in the northeast corner of iowa...I spent about 3 hours walking a dry creek bed and my legs are still sore. I thought I would post some pictures so that everyone can see what I found. I brought home a good 20 pounds I am sure. Here is some of my nicer stuff anyone know what this might be? a nice agate and an awsome 2 3/4 inch chert scraper...I can't believe I found either of these!!! nice yellow, orange and red. any idea what it might be? just of a few of the nicer Lake Superior agates I found and my wonderful scraper again. I wish It wasn't an hour and a half away or I would be up there ever night... thanks for looking scott

hey kim yes, it was a wonderful time. It took me back to my child hood when I use to dig for glass bottle. I think I am gonna save the one in the first picture tell I can afford a slab saw and the other 3 multi colored ones will be broke up to tumble. I was picking up all the red I spoted, didn't keep it all..but that seemed to be a good way of finding the agates

Hello Scooterin73 Great findings! Could the yellow parts on the rock be some sulphur? Anyway, it is always a great feeling when we find rocks that we really like! By the way....I'm was also curious about the word "Scraper"and found this: Meaning of SCRAPER Pronunciation: 'skreypur WordNet Dictionary Definition: [n] any of various hand tools for scraping . Definitely, something related to scraping! What about a rock used to scrape others for hardness testing purposes??? Bye now ;D

My understanding of the word ;"scraper" is that it was used to scrape the old buffalo hides, making sure to remove any bits of meat and fat in preparation of the curing process. And any other hide that was usefull to the people living in the region. Nice rocks , now to tumble or not to tumble Jack

The rocks look great, but that scraper is quite an amazing find. Looks like it still has a pretty good edge on it too! That must be at least a couple hundred years old, perhaps even thousands of years. Heh, heh, looks like you weren't the first lapidarist in the area to work the local stone!

Hello Scott,
I am not sure if I have siad hello or not ... so ... Hello and welcome!
Some nice material there, that is for sure.
One thing about it, you should be able to find many more Indian Artifacts in the area. We have a lot of arrowheads in this part of the country (Southwestern Kansas).
Certain areas have very explicit rules about taking Indian Artifacts, it might be worth a look into and be certain that there are no restrictions for that area.
I used to go arrowhead hunting in the Pawnee National Grasslands of Northern Colorado. The fine for taking an arrowhead from this area is 500.00 a piece! So it is best to be certian that you are in a clear area.
Great find! Here is hoping that you may find many more.
Enjoy,
John

I have CRS just like John so just in case .... Welcome to the forum. That scrapper is way too neat, what a find!! Great rocks too. I shouldn't even come to this forum when it's raining out. Just makes me want to go pick rocks and I can't. Guess I'll go open my tumbler and peek at those instead. LOL [glow=red,2,300]Cher[/glow]
