WOW, never had that happen. I did check some rubies I'm running tonight and, though there were no bubbles, it smelled to high heaven! Some rocks are gassier than others, I suppose. What you running?

Cookie is right, some rocks are gassier than others. Be forwarned if you ever do peridot. The stuff foams like mad! I have found that new barrels will often do that for the first one or two grit runs.

Hello! ;D Yes Shorty! It kinds of look like a chocolate chip cookie, not bad at all. What about tasting it for us for experimental purposes? Ha-ha-ha! Thanks Shorty ;D ;D ;D John, you must be a really strong man to eat a soap that looks like that! Ha-ha-ha!!! I bet it tastes delicious, humm? ;D Cookie, I'm running the 100 yards;D ;D ;D! No, seriously, I know that I have some quartz, some granite, maybe some pet rock, and a lot of other rocks that I found that I'm not sure of what they are yet. I still have to learn how to recognize rocks well. Otter, who knows, maybe I do have some peridot in there. I will try to look at how peridot looks to see if I have some there. Thanksto all for your postings! ;D ;D ;D

Being as I have not tumbled a load YET.....I take it this not normal? How do you know you have gas? What do you do to correct this problem? Just in case I get gas I will know what to do Bunny

Cher I got the Vanilla Type ROCK Gas! ;D He-he-he! OH TOM:o !!! I can't believe it! You mischievous little boy, shame on you! Ha-ha-ha! ;D Anyway.... If I had more than one tumbler, I'll probably try adding one tablet of Tums to a barrel with gas to see if that could solve the problem as well. Quite an experiment to try! Any volunteers? (He-He-He). Hello Bunny & Welcome to the Hobby!!!:-) The gas problem with the rocks could happen sometimes depending on the rocks you have. The best way to find out is to open the tumbler and look. I'm new to tumbling too and I'm doing my first batch of rocks. I'm curious so I'm opening my barrel daily to see how things are, and also to add more rocks, or plastic pellets if needed. The day that I discovered the gas buildup I added 2 tablespoons of Borax to each barrel (3 pounds barrels) of my tumbler. I have read in this board that gas buildup could cause the explosion of the barrels, to me that’s very scary You can buy the 20MuleTeam Borax in boxes at supermarkets and drugstores for $4-5. They come in big boxes (4Lbs 12Oz). To make my life a little easier in the long run, I just fill empty spice (clean) containers and label them to have the Borax and Ivory soap handy and ready to use in a little utility basket. Borax can also be used to clean the rocks in the barrel. It is used for a couple of hours after each of the polishing steps to avoid grit contamination (that could ruin the final finish). For cleaning and also for burnish (step 5) the Lortone booklet recommends using Ivory Snow. A lot of people prefer Borax. I will experiment with both to try to find out which one will I prefer. Well I hope this helps a little . Here is a picture of my borax in a clean ex-spice container:

I have never had a gas problem and I never open my barrels once they get started until it's time to recharge. Although I did when I first started tumbling, so you'll get over that wanting to check them everyday when you get more confident and experienced with tumbling.
I wash my rocks before I start them in grit - I think this eliminates alot of the gas problem. Rather than opening my barrels, I just keep an eye on the bottom for any expansion. If the bottom of the barrel looks like it is bulging, I check it. No bulge, no open.
I also never add anything, except grit, to the barrels. I have never felt that there is a reason to. Read of too many bad experiences folks had after adding this or that - esp. sugar or cornmeal. DON'T ever add those to your barrels. It will not be fun cleaning up the mess! ;D
