Found this on Friday- does anyone have any tips for removing the "brown" coating on the outside of the rock to uncover the fairburn? And does anyone know what that coating is? Attachments:

If it is iron, IRON OUT is excellent.

Yeah, Iron Out is excellent- but is there a way to tell if if it's iron? I guess I could always soak it for a few days and see if it works... Thanks Pat!

Citric acid or oxalic acid also work great for removing iron costings.

I'll try that, too. Thanks!

So I put this one in Iron Out yesterday, haven't seen much change yet. It's worked very well on other rocks that I've collected- but I just bought some Wood Bleach (oxalic acid), and I'm going to give that a shot. Outside, of course! If I get decent results I'll try to post a picture. I'm keeping my eye out for a cheap crock pot that I can use, but for now I'm just going to give it a go.

Three days in oxalic acid and not much change. I keep making the mixture a little stronger without better results. I took it out, rinsed it well and scrubbed it with a brush- a bit more of the outer "shell" came off, but nothing really noticeable. I guess the next step would be to use a mechanical approach, like a dremel. I just want a peek! Stubborn rock.

The outer shell is solid rock ..the only way to see more pattern is to grind the shell off...
