I have tumbled both together - coarse grind through polish in a QT66... no probs.
On the Mohs hardness scale, Garnet can be somewhere around a 7, and Topaz around an 8... close. You probably will not have a problem tumbling them together, but expect a little more reduction to the Garnets.

I agree that you can. While topaz is definitely harder than garnet, its perfect cleavage makes it more fragile than garnet. Still, you'll want them to not to be knocking together excessively, so giving them a bit of extra space and cushioning/filler media wouldn't hurt.
