No problem, my first university course was physical geology. Loved it but it wasn't my major and didn't take another geology course through 10 years of university training, (unless rodent paleontology counts), but yes with Ph.D in hand and retired from wildlife research I'm back to rocks. Go figure, I could have stayed with rocks all along and saved some effort. There's nothing wrong with local U. Exceptional at local U is better than barely making it at an Ivy League school. Spend the money and get them interested in rock, geology, science. the universe.
