When you look around your home and every flat spot is covered in rock, your hobby may be out of control!

Yep, reached that point years ago. Have made attempts to clean up, but it's too difficult to decide what to let go (especially after a few instances of deaccessioning a piece, only to find you miss it or need it again for reference).

...when you can't find the nice piece of California limb opal, or that big black rock with the weird fossils in it, or that honking big chunk of banded jasper because they are here in the house somewhere...

First off, those are beautiful covers for flat surfaces *L*. Secondly, I hear you. I no longer smell like people, just horses. And my shop, though huge, is so full of horse and rock stuff I can hardly move around in it....Mel

Around here, no horizontal surface is safe!

I only have 10 buckets of rock in the living room. There is still plenty of room.

This is pretty much what I said about my work room, until I needed to drag a ton (probably close to literally) of other stuff in here. Then they went to live outside. ...now they're slowly coming back into the same room they left after being scrubbed off from spending a few years outside.

It might set you back a few bucks, but at least it is not illegal - yet.

I certainly resemble that statement! I've been trying to clean, organize and purge the rock corner of the garage for 3 days now. Slowly making a dent. It had gotten so bad I couldn't even get to the lapidary equipment. I've managed to sort 6 - 5 gal buckets. Lick a whole bunch of rocks I forgot I collected. Started every available tumbler rolling (once I could get to them). Glued a bunch of end cuts to boards and even cut a few slabs. That's cleaning and organizing in my book, even though I can't quite get to my Genie yet. As far as purging goes I have taken 2, 5 - gal buckets out to the big hole in the yard that we will be filling in with a load of fill dirt later this year. Someday, if someone digs up that spot, they will find rocks from all over the US in that pit. But I do solemnly swear, they were all leverites that somehow jumped in my truck and found their way back home with me. No good material will be harmed in the cleaning of my garage.
