Could it be fossil bone? Might explain why Sierra was excited.

She has started a habit of giving me rocks she feels I would be interested in. Her enclosure, is an old, open door, 2 bay garage. She has her own insulated house within them. The floors are dirt. She has unearthed treasures before, that I complimented her on. Now, whenever she finds something interesting, she gives it to me. By give, I mean, barks excitedly. When I come over, she picks up the rock and deposits it in my hands.

Wish my dog gave me rocks, rather than the rather unspeakable things she'd drag home when we lived near a riding club. My cat lets me know when he misses the litter box, though (well, that's also not even close to being in the same league as your pup).

I like your dog’s choice of gifts. Our cat brings us dead things!

Fossil fern stem or root also comes to mind. It looks as though it has been stream tumbled/eroded, so you might have to cut one end to further identify.

My cats bring me dead things, too. And miss the litter box sometimes. Rock was found in a glacial deposit area. Have a few that look similar to that.

Just curious - what do you suppose she bases that on? How a rock looks? Size, color, shape? How it feels? Maybe you have touched it at some time in the past (maybe without even realizing it?), and she can smell your scent on it?
Or perhaps she can feel a healing power in the rock? People can't pick a winning rock 100 % of the time, how can a dog? Guessing this is an innate talent, not something you can teach?
Have had a number of dogs (or have they had me?) over the years. The very smartest was a lab-shepherd mix from the dog pound.
We got her as a pup, and named her Shadow. Could have just as well have been Glue, or Velcro, if you catch my drift. She loved to play with rocks, but never did find any that were special. Maybe she thought they were?

Sierra often digs a cooling hole in the floor. I have been looking at the rocks she unearths. When I find a good one, I show it to her and compliment her. Since I started this last year, she has given me 3 rocks. All were good ones.

My dogs would also dig cooling holes, although, mostly in the yard where there are junk rocks, or in sandy desert areas where there were no rocks.
Pretty smart pup, good way to train her.

Now that is a great dog. I wish I could get Gypsy to do that but she only seems interested in chasing lizards and such when out rockhounding.

Good Girl. She gave me another today, that I have not photographed yet. Will add to this thread, as I think it is either fossil coral or spotted chalcedony.
