These preforms went through a 6 week tumbling process, starting with medium grit. They are fairly smooth, but would not take a polish. The other Granites in the batch polished. They were given to me as slices at the Flambeau Mine in Rusk, County, Wisconsin. Material came from the mine and was sliced by an employee. If he told me what it was, I forgot, as this was in about 1990. The material is about a 6- 6.5 mohs. The black areas seem to be harder than the pink ones. Both have a crystal structure, like Granite. The black appears finer than the pink in most areas. Thinking if I could get an ID, it would help with knowing how to polish. Thanks. blk red 2 blk red 2 crop

It sure looks like a good candidate to undercut. The least guided guess to what the stone is would be a banded quartzite, but that's on the basis of minimal information. If so, it might polish.

fernwood That is quartzite like Peruano said. WI has lots of quartzite. I really like the stuff from the Baraboo area.
