About 20 years ago, my wife started buying cabs, slabs, rough and mineral samples on ebay. I believe because of her interest in the metaphysical properties. In 2000, I started cabbing. About 6 years ago, I sorted through the unknown and sold a couple hundred pounds of slabs and rough.
During the sorting process, I had a good idea of what I had. After the sale, I had an idea what was there and put slabs in labeled boxes and rough in miscellaneous large boxes. I resorted again and offered what I didn't want to cab, recently. During the sort process, there were still some surprises.
I am a cigar smoker and about 5 years ago, I started keeping track of purchases and entering what I bought into a spreadsheet. The majority of rough and slabs were purchased on ebay, the emails were deleted and buying history doesn't exist like it does for a site like Amazon.
I started putting completed cabs in riker boxes; fill up a box and start another. I had about 70 boxes. Last year, I couldn't cab so I went through the boxes and sorted into like. I then photographed the boxes and posted most of them here. When I am looking for a cab, I only have to look at the posts.
I should probably dump the pictures I loaded to a cd. I have a lot of work I posted here on photobucket and I will consider it lost. The picture hosting site I ma currently using could disappear, so I don't want to depend on a picture hosting site.
I was looking for an unusual slab that I posted on the what do you see thread. I found a picture of it on an email my wife sent to her sister with a picture of a selection of cabs she could choose. I was saddened by seeing what was gone. She has a lot of sisters and given away a lot of my cabs.
I don't mind that the cabs are gone only that I have no pictures of them. I wish I had done the sorting and photographing before they were given away. Lesson learned. Take, pictures of my cabs and do a better job of sorting slabs. A lot of slabs were in work in progress or work to be done boxes.
How do you keep track of what you have.
