Just wondering if anyone has a way to make petrified wood shiny and to keep the shine? It looks so much better when it's wet and I'd like to keep that look- preferably without lacquer or anything like that. Thanks!

Ya, you polish it like you would any rock, agate wood is harder but opalized will polish also. They will both keep the polish especially if you keep it out of the weather. some wood I have polished will bleach out if you leave it in direct sunlight, if too soft it will not polish but most will, I have some that is pretty soft and it still polishes.
Nice. I've never polished rocks, either- this is all new and definitely a learning experience! I did read somewhere about just using Pledge Multi-Surface Floor Finish. Of course the wood wouldn't be polished exactly, but it might be shiny... I don't know, I'll have to just play around I guess! Thanks!

Pretty sure I started down that path with my first step into the rock beds!!! I have a friend I work with who's son has a tumbler I'm going to borrow- or buy if he wants to sell it... That means a whole lot of reading. And you're right. This is absolutely the best place to be with the nicest, most knowledgeable people who can help me along in my obsession! I went collecting on Friday for about 5 hours, then again on Sunday for another 8 in 100 degree weather- the rocks were almost too hot to pick up. Yep, I'm hooked.

Its kind of hard to not be hooked when you are picking up what you've been gathering.
Heck, I want to head out to your neck of the woods and join you!

I just threw a couple pieces of AZ pet wood in the tumbler with other hard rocks. They decreased in size a lot, but are very shiny. Took a nice polish. Have another batch going now in course. Larger ones.
Listen to the rock. The rock knows its destiny. It will guide you in fulfilling that.

And that's just the good ones, the ones that I know about. I'll try to get a picture of the huge tub of rocks we've collected that's sitting in my garage, waiting for a saw or tumbler! Once I learn what's good to use and what's not I might be able to thin it out a bit- but for now it sits. And you're more than welcome to come hunt anytime- I'm always down for heading out, the more the merrier! Having someone who knows what they're doing would probably help. I usually just collect Fairburns and petrified wood but I have an awful lot of maybes...

If I get that tumbler I'm going to try some. I read somewhere that you don't want to leave wood in there for very long if you want to keep the characteristics of the wood. Is that true? Either way, I'm going to give it a shot.

Yes, if you want to keep the bark looking areas, check often and change stages. Course will grind off the bark quickly, depending on the wood.
Thanks! Yes, I do have some specimens that I would like to keep "natural"- but I also have some that have already been worn down. When I do start to tumble, I may have to ask for some more advice....

rocknrob: There was a shop in Portland, don't know if it's still there called Kenny and Zukes who made the absolute best pastrami sandwiches I have ever had. The problem is every restaurant thinks their sandwich is worth $20 now and seldom makes the grade.

rocknrob: So, to end my thread on sandwiches. If you find your sandwich worthy of that price by all means keep going to that restaurant
