It’s that time of year. Picked last week and again today. Now have 6 quarts of deliciousness. These are my favorite berries. Extra long season this year. Neighbor should be able to pick for a few more days. I picked today until the storms were too close for comfort. Was taught at a young age to be a clean berry picker and remove any debris from the pail immediately. Photos from today are a little blurry, as it was very humid outside. Over the years I have developed many recipes for these. bush 7-7-18 pail 2 7-7-28 pail 1-7-6-18 plant 1 7-12-18 plant 2 7-12-18

Those look delicious! Reminds me of summers at Lake Emily. One of our favorite things to do was to pick black raspberries and then enjoy the pie that our mother would make. One summer we abandoned our usual picking spots because my brother and I, while doing some general exploring, stumbled onto black raspberry heaven! We hurried back to the cottage and reported the wonderful find. The next day we all set out with pails to pick. The site was so productive that I was able to fill my pail by standing in one spot at a single overloaded bush. I was so focused on picking that I ignored the occasional itch or tickle on my legs. I was nearly finished when I felt a bite a little higher up in my pants. I looked down and saw that I had been standing on this huge anthill the entire time. I had ants all over my pants and inside, too! I started yelling and dancing like my pants were on fire and lost half of my pail in the process. No real harm done, but the pies were so goooood! Let me know if you’re interested, fernwood , and I’ll send you a Goggle Earth image with the approximate location marked.

opalpyrexiaLove your story. I ran into a bunch of chiggers once while picking blackberries in NE Indiana. Was in pain for weeks. Around here there are black flies that bite, hard. Fire ants too. I sacrifice those berry bushes if I see fire ants. Sure, send the image.

MMMMM..... delectable, natural goodness. Reminds me of my childhood in Rhode Island. We used to pick red raspberries, grapes, blackberries, apples, pears- you name it. All wild and free for the picking.

Those fruits are gorgeous, Beth! And I bet they taste pretty darn good as well.
I'll take mine in a cobbler, thank-you-very-much. Not big on jellies. Well, there is one jelly I like, jalapeno jelly made with the recipe from Mike Fossilman . Although I did modify it just a little, adding more jalapenos to give it more flavor, and to make it a bit hotter

Ha ha ha ha ha. As I was reading the story opalpyrexia posted, I was sure he was going to say he got into a poison oak patch. Well, that's what we have here, PO. I guess back there it would be poison ivy. No fire ants around here - yet. Another thing I'd be worried about in some other areas of the country would be Yogi and Boo-Boo. They'd be carrying a big berry pail, instead of a pic-a-nic basket, lol.

rockjunquierockpickerforever I love harvesting anything I can. I have raspberries, blackberries, black raspberries, grapes, currants, plums and apples on my land. Also mushrooms and other wild goodies. Have you ever had Kuchen? A traditional German dessert with a dough like a thick crepe. Then a type of custard topped with berries or gummy candy. Raisins work too. I have made a syrup for waffles/pancakes with the black raspberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries (not all together). Has maple syrup and nutmeg in it. I am allergic to peppers, so do not put them in anything. A local shop around here has someone who is making a variety of exotic jams with peppers in them. Stuff like Mango, Pineapple, Currents, limes, etc. They are very popular. Same person makes fruit juice and adds peppers to that. We have poison oak, burning nettles, poison ivy, A weed that looks like Queen Anne’s Lace, but burns like crazy, and poison sumac. Lots of nasties to look out for.

That kuchen sounds really good! Eating fruits and veggies as God intended us to the healthiest way to live. Some produce sold in stores - tomatoes, for instance - are not even edible. Is someone going to be helping you with your critters and spread the next couple months? Pick berries for you?

No help supposedly needed. Will see what happens. Am supposed to be able to move around carefully. Just not look down or turn head for a while. Surgery is outpatient, with potential for overnight stay. Do have someone moving hay for me to a place where I can just toss it out a little at a time.
I stocked up on needed items. Have a lot of raspberries by the house, so should be able to pick them. Might be able to get a ride to get blueberries, depending on how I feel. Blackberries come later in the year.

I remember picking raspberries at my grandmother's home in Detroit when I was young. Great memories. Jean rockpickerforever , I like jalapeno jelly as well, but the wife also makes a great habanero jelly. You ought to try some if you can. If you need a recipe, PM me. I'll see if the wife can dig it up.

The folks moved to the southern Oregon coast when dad retired. He did a lot of fishing on the Rogue river, or picked berries in season if fishing was no good. He was picking berries on a really hot day and heard a rustle on the other side of the patch. He said he went over for a look, and left pretty quickly. He figured if the guy picking on the other side of the berry patch was tough enough to wear a heavy fur coat on a hot day, he could have that patch.
