It's been two years or more, so I need to do some practice cabs. Dryhead, 3 Morrisonite and an Owyhee. The first two Morrisonites are 3/16" thick and I want to cut a flat top. I'm going to practice on the first one.

Did my first session on the wheels. Considering the layoff, I'm not disappointed with my work. Best of all, I've had a sore hip for a little while and it was ok with me cabbing. I had one unexpected casualty. A cab fractured so I recut it. I marked the girdles and center lines on three cabs and was about to superglue on the dop sticks. I couldn't find any and ordered some online. I'm going to need to take days off between sessions until my hip is better anyway. The shapes need a little work, but I will do that after they are dopped. When I do a flat top I concentrate on the top. When I dome, I get the shape correct on the bottom. No point taking a picture of the other three cabs until they are finished

What makes you decide flat top or dome if I may ask? Thanks

Two usual reasons. Thin material and when I know the feature that attracted me to the slab will disappear. The preform on the left is the same front and back. The scene on the right would disappear, when I ground it. I don't like cabbing flat tops because the top and the bottom have to line up and that is challenging for me. The one on the left was tp be practice for the one on the right. Here's a Willow Creek cab (picture is a little fuzzy because it was cropped from a screen grab) where the scene is shallow and would disappear when domed. This was a 1/4" thick slab.

I have 8 cabs in process. Two need to be domed and the rest sanded and polished which is for me the no stress part of cabbing. The dryhead lost the dop stick and I added a Morrisonite freefrom that needs to be domed. I'm pleased with my cutting on the Owyhee and that the pattern was about the same. The slab was over 5/16" and the cab has a high dome.
