Received this matched set to make a pair of earrings. Trying to determine the best approach. The whorl end is a little over 1/8” thick. Would it be best to take my chances and drill a hole in the end for an eye up? Any other suggestions? I still do not have soldering supplies. Prefer not to glue on modified end caps. I am concerned about achieving the correct balance with these. Also, wondering if I should leave the reverse side as is, or try smoothing/polishing it? Do not want to lose the iridescence or details, but both are a little rough in places. Thank you. shells 1 shells 2 shells 3

Have to remember also, that these where a living creature and are very fragile... Make sure your diamond bits are very sharp, or they will fracture... Good luck..

Agree, which is why I was a little concerned about drilling the holes. Have some never used diamond bits, so will muster up the courage to try.

Is it possible to get another ammonite to test drill on to see how it goes? The non-iridescent ones should be relatively inexpensive or maybe someone has a broken one that could be donated to the cause?
I've never drilled one, so am wondering just how fragile it might be.
