I'm trying out some 46/70 in my QT66 and would like to know if I should follow with some time in 60/90 before moving to a Lot O? In the Lot O I start with 120/220, will that remove the scratches from 46/70?
Thanks
Win

Don't know about the Loto but in a regular rotary it works fine going from 46/70 to 120/220 split. It also works fine in Gemstone vib tumbler so it should work in Loto

Win, you can see my pictures in the tumbles thread... I use 46/70 in my QT12/66 and then 120/220 in the Lot-o, followed by AO500 x 4 days then polish x 2 days and finished with 4 hr burnish with Borax. Seems fine

Thanks, good information, as always!! I run a little different in the Lot-O - 120/220 for 30 hours =/-, 500 AO500 for 24 hrs, AO1000 for 48 hrs, polish for 72 hrs and burnish for 6 hrs. I upped the burnish time from my last success with Obsidian, figured it can't hurt.
Really interested to see how the 46/70 cuts, I added some pretty gnarly pieces. I don't shape rocks prior to tumbling, love the natural look but I do get some losers!

I go from 46/70 in my Lortone right to straight 220 in my Lot-O with no problems.

I'm using the 46/70 in the rotary as well before switching to 120/220 in the vibe. Sometimes when the grit doesn't break down perfectly or has some stragglers, what comes out of the rotary is a little rough to the touch, but even those have been fine going into the next stage thus far if there are any that are otherwise free of major pits or cracks, which is my handwavey criteria for when something's ready to move along. I'm using the 12lb lortone barrels, but they're the same diameter as the 6lb barrels I think, just deeper; with the higher 'fall' (which would be the same for the 6lb barels) the 46/70 works well in place of 60/90 and will break down to about the same as the 60/90 would in the smaller ones. That could be way off base, but it's working out pretty well thus far, so I'm not arguin' with it!

I don't think it matters what size the grit starts out at. What matters is what size it is when you do the cleanout.

I have been using some Ungraded SiC in my QT66 for a few months now. I personally ran this grit through some 1/4 inch hardware cloth to remove all of the SiC pebbles that were in it, The big 1/4 and 1/8 inch grit bits take about 3 weeks but they all eventually breakdown. The Large grit pebbles bigger than 1/4 inch form smooth round little nodules and last a very long time in a QT66.
